This article provides an overview of the Survivors: Local Stories of Domestic Violence (hereafter, Survivors) civic engagement project. Survivors’ learning objectives were to increase the understanding of the complexity of intimate partner abuse and foster empathy in outsiders’ responses, something at the cornerstone of the #MeToo social movement and connected to trauma-informed teaching. To accomplish these goals, students were given quotes from…

  • Biography, culture and militancy in Spanish anarchism

Jordana N Navarro, Javier Navarro Navarro•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian & Latin…•2022

Higinio Noja Ruiz (Nerva, Huelva, 1894-Valencia, 1972) remains a little-known figure in the history of anarchism and libertarian culture in Spain. However, he enjoyed great prestige during the 1920s and 1930s thanks to his novels, essays, leaflets, and articles, which were widely read by a libertarian and working-class audience. Noja Ruiz was a man of many talents: a social writer and novelist, an anarcho-syndicalist essayist and thinker, a ratio…

Open Access•Shelly Clevenger, Jordana N Navarro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Criminal…•2021

Sexual assault has a devastating effect on survivors as well as their family and friends (i.e., secondary survivors). Research shows that survivors’ abilities to cope in the aftermath of sexual trauma are particularly difficult in the “internet” age. This struggle stems from the abilities of perpetrators to use cyberspace to abuse, harass, and threaten survivors vis-à-vis various cybercrimes: cyberstalking, cybersexual abuse, and cyberfraud. Inde…

    Open Access•Jordana N Navarro•ARTICLE•Historia y Política Ideas…•2019

The editors and main collaborators to the influential Spanish libertarian magazine Estudios (Valencia, 1928- 1937) showed a permanent interest in connecting the magazine with the main networks of global anarchism in the interwar years, and also with contemporary international campaigns in defense of birth control, eugenics, sexual reform, naturism or pacifism. As its predecessor did—the magazine Generación Consciente (1923- 1928)—, Estudios was l…

  • Technology and the endless “cat and mouse” game

    Open Access•Shelly Clevenger, Jordana N Navarro et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2018

As educators of future law enforcement and social service personnel, one of the most important objectives of faculty members within the social sciences disciplines is to foster a sense of empathy toward victims of crime among their students. Empathy toward victims of crime, and domestic abuse in particular, is vastly important as evidence suggests that the reactions survivors encounter upon disclosure influences reporting behavior to law enforcem…

The rapid advancement of technology has produced several substantial benefits that enrich individuals' lives, but some also note that technology has provided new methods to engage in crime—particularly stalking. This investigation was one of the first to explore whether a relationship existed between cyberstalking and a new phenomenon becoming a pressing issue in the lives of adolescents: Internet Addiction. High school students in a rural North …
