Perceived threat drives support for coercive border enforcement against unauthorized crossings
The securitization of the borders has intensified through harsh enforcement and deterrence strategies, yet little is known about what factors drive public approval of such measures. Using a large-scale survey experiment, we examine the extent to which the US public condones Border Patrol’s violent response to unauthorized border crossings. We find that the approval of violence is driven by perceived threats: respondents are more likely to support…
When money is not enough
How can we encourage sustainable choices even though they yield scarce gains for the current generation? Monetary incentives and concerns for future generations are argued to have far-reaching effects on sustainable behaviours, they are at the backbone of current policy frameworks and climate change campaigns. Yet, there is a scarcity of causal evidence assessing the effectiveness of these interventions in overcoming the social dilemma at the cor…
Gambling outlets as agents of local area disorganization
Amid growing public and policy concerns there is a great need for a systematic analysis of the relationship between commodity industries and social disorganization. Using data from the ONS, the UK Census, the UK Police Street-level Crime Dataset, and the POI Ordnance Survey, we analyse the association between gambling outlets as an example of a commodity industry and crime events across England and Wales and explore the possibility of a heterogen…
Trust and Strength of Family Ties
We provide a conceptual replication of an experimental study that uncovered a robust correlation between the strength of individuals’ family ties and their distrust of strangers, striving to establish whether the link is causal. Using a different subjects pool and an online setting, we repeat the binary trust-game experiment from Ermisch and Gambetta and enrich it by manipulating the payoffs to create a low-trust and high-trust environment. The k…
Other-Regarding Behaviors and Attitudes toward Asylum Seekers
Previous studies predominantly examined self-reported attitudes toward economic migrants and refugees along with different types of public concerns. Few of these studies used behavioral measures to analyze how asylum seeker inflows may sway public preferences toward them. However, the literature remains largely silent on the issue as to how correcting misperceptions of asylum seeker inflows may improve a host population's support for them. The au…
Covid-19 vulnerability and perceived norm violations predict loss of social trust
The Effect of Trusting and Trustworthy Environments on the Provision of Public Goods
Trusting and trustworthy environments are argued to promote collective action, as people learn to rely on their fellow citizens and believe that only few individuals will free ride. To test the causal validity of this mechanism, we propose an experimental design that allows us to create different trusting and trustworthy conditions simply by (i) manipulating the incentive structure of an iterated binary trust game and (ii) allowing information to…
(Re)Productive Discourses
Children born as a result of wartime sexual violence have not gained a place in the stories covered by the Colombian media. Based on an extensive content analysis (using the software MAXQDA 12) of newspaper articles published between 1990 and 2015, ethnographic content analysis, and drawing upon feminist critical discourse analysis, this paper explores how information about these children is presented as part of storylines that use the explanator…
Returns to Foreign and Host Country Qualifications
The integration of migrants in the US economic system is a central concern of policy-makers and scholars. A faster and smoother assimilation of valuable human capital would indeed benefit the labour market, increasing its efficiency. To investigate the integration of minorities and migrants in the US labour market, we employ data from the Current Population Survey from June 2016 (the primary source of labour force statistics in the US). We focus …
Does community social embeddedness promote generalized trust? An experimental test of the spillover effect
