The Emerald Handbook of Digital Media in Greece
The Emerald Handbook of Digital Media in Greece: Journalism and Political Communication in Times of Crisis presents the empirical applications of digital media in political communication and in a number of social settings including the environment, homelessness, migration and social movements.
Digital Labor Solidarities, Collective Formations, and Relational Infrastructures
Research on digital worker experiences have shed light on the problematic realities of digital labor, which include increasing levels of stress and anxiety over financial and career instability, physical exhaustion, and isolation - all of which underscore the precarity that belie the optimistic facade of labor under the new economy. Given the multiple constraints underlying collective formation among digital workers, this panel explores the chara…

Did life find its way? A reply to Kingsmith and von Bargen
This is a short reflection and response to the article ‘Life Finds a Way’: Mapping a Post-positivist Marxian Science by A.T. Kingsmith and Julian von Bargen (2018). It sets out the main argumentation for the dadascience approach proposed by the authors and focuses primarily on their critique and alternative theoretical development in relation to the concept of class and the dialectic, as well as their attempt to account for indeterminacy and chan…
Platform Ideologies
Drawing from three sets of literature (critical economy of platformization, labor organization, and digital activism), this article introduces an integrated framework to analyze ideological production in digital intermediation platforms, particularly in relation to the sharing economy. We analyze documents, fieldwork interviews from twenty-eight actors, and observation of events in Barcelona, Paris, and Berlin during 2015–2017. We find that there…
Digital Life on Instagram
Discussing the social uses of Instagram, this book shows how visuality is changing people’s perception of the world and their mediated lives, illustrating how the platform shapes new social relationships, marketing techniques, privacy and surveillance concerns, and representations of the self, arguing for the development of new mobile visualities
Adorno in the Kingdom of Unfreedom - History and Freedom's Lecture The Principle of Nationality
Introduction By 1964, Adorno could see the first clouds of disagreement with his students on the horizon, who were mobilizing against proposed legislation on the Emergency Laws and the American War in Vietnam: ‘Admittedly, from 1967 on this opposition in part adopted forms of protest that Adorno was to condemn emphatically as “pseudo-activity”. Not content with merely interpreting the world, the students called for social change, and Adorno’s lec…
Schizorevolutions versus microfascisms
This article investigates the role of ‘anarchy’ in state securitisation. First, we discuss state hierarchies’ struggle with active and reactive anarchic networks, theorising a state in existential crisis, which exploits anti-anarchist discourses to respond to network threats. In the second part, we illustrate with examples the use of fear of anarchy in hierarchical productive structures of securitisation. As an ‘antiproduction assemblage’, the st…
A Comparative Cyberconflict Analysis of Digital Activism Across Post-Soviet Countries
This article analyses digital activism comparatively in relation to three Post-Soviet regions: Russian/anti-Russian in Crimea and online political deliberation in Belarus, in juxtaposition to Estonia’s digital governance approach. The authors show that in civil societies in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, cultural forms of digital activism, such as internet memes, thrive and produce and reproduce effective forms of political deliberation. In contras…

The Social Media Political Subject Is an Infant
Any random sampling of a Facebook timeline or Twitter feed, to take the obvious examples, provides a prepackaged view of global politics. It is restrictive because we choose it to reflect our own pet subjects, groups, likes, and world interests. The lens is prejudiced to reflect our race, class, gender, sexuality, ideology, and affective positionality. We enter a social media world as many as 10 or 50 times a day that has ourselves as the center …

Cyberconflict at the edge of chaos
This paper differentiates between different levels of conflict in the open-source movement and discusses the role conflict and self-organisation play in the emergence of structures of leadership emergence and the bifurcation into core and peripheral groups and soft control by cryptohierarchies; in the different levels of group polarisation and conflict between communities negotiating their identity, strategy, coordination and complexity; and last…
Parallel visions of peer production
The 'parallel visions' proposed by the contributing authors to this issue are intended to challenge the dominant themes of capitalist organisation and production through an in-depth look at peer-to-peer production and the development of software and sharing - a movement which, the authors argue, is based on new visions for value systems, ethics and governance. We have organised their contributions into sections based on the relevant aspects of th…

The Politics of ‘Cyberconflict
The turn of the century witnessed the emergence of a new kind of conflict named ‘cyberconflict’, meaning conflict in computer-mediated environments (cyberspace). This article seeks to introduce the key terms and themes of cyberconflict and argue that two different trends occur: one between ethnic or religious groups fighting in cyberspace, as they do in real life; and second, between a social movement and its antagonistic institution (hacktivism
