Open Access•M Zakiul Islam, Yumei Cheng et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2026

This study examines China’s policy initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation and job creation for the Bai ethnic minority in Yunnan Province, focussing on sustainable tourism promotion. Findings reveal that nearly one-third of ethnic minorities faced economic hardship between 2000 and 2002. However, targeted policies have since improved rural poverty rates; poverty in Yunnan decreased from 14.03% in 2015 to 5.39% in 2018, with 1.51 million people …

  • Why is it necessary to implement the common but differentiated responsibilities principle to achieve global clean energy sustainability

    Rukai Yang, M Zakiul Islam•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2026

The global shift to clean energy is crucial for climate change mitigation and achieving the UN SDGs. However, inequities in emissions, technology, and finances between developed and developing nations hinder progress toward SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) and SDG 13 (climate action). These disparities underscore the need for the Common But Differentiated Responsibilities (CBDR) principle in clean energy governance, an area that remains undere…

  • Analysis of China’s Environmental Regulations and Corresponding Differences for Green Steel Industry Development

Open Access•M Zakiul Islam•ARTICLE•The Journal of Environment &…•2024

In the last 20 years, China’s steel production has proliferated, leading to increased environmental damage by releasing 574,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), 1,114,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx), and 897,000 tons of particulate matter (PM) in 2020; therefore, the country is now struggling to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change because of the conflicting demands of economic growth and environmental protection. Given the global em…

  • Implementing Integrated Approaches to Preserve the Mangrove Ecosystem Services: A Study of Bangladesh Sundarbans

Open Access•M Zakiul Islam•ARTICLE•The Journal of Environment &…•2024

The sole home for the iconic Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris), the Sundarbans mangrove forest, is now confronting multi-layered threats. This paper aims to analyse the existing integration approaches to conserve the invaluable wild species of the Sundarbans mangrove forest and critically evaluate the pragmatism and challenges of the integration approaches, such as in-situ and ex-situ methods, and the role of development partners, which include non-…

  • Why is it necessary to integrate circular economy practices for agri‐food sustainability from a global perspective

    Open Access•M Zakiul Islam, Lili Zheng•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2024•References: 5

Our comprehensive analysis delves into the viability of incorporating circular economy (CE) principles to effectively address Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)‐12 (“Responsible Consumption and Production”), with a focus on minimising food waste and loss (FWL) and lessening environmental harm. The study relied on existing literature from various organisations, including the United Nations, Food and Agriculture Organisation, and World Resources In…

  • Why does Australia need to mitigate food loss and waste to ensure food security

    Open Access•M Zakiul Islam•ARTICLE•Sustainable Development•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Food waste in Australia is causing a massive financial burden on the country, with an estimated annual cost of $36.6 billion. Several factors, such as food loss and waste (FLW), inflation, unemployment, and low income, concurrently contribute to Australia's food insecurity problem. This study mainly focuses on FLW, which plays a significant role in Australia's food insecurity. This study finds that despite taking numerous initiatives, including t…

  • Is celebration of New Year and other festivals worth their environmental impact

    Open Access•M Zakiul Islam•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2024•References: 27

The global tradition of fireworks at festivals causes significant environmental harm, including air, water, noise and light pollution, and impacts on human health. Diwali and the Chinese New Year fireworks can spike the Air Quality Index and elevate particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations in capitals during and after celebrations. This commentary examines evidence for the detrimental effects of fireworks on the environment, human health and wil…

  • The role of law in conserving wildlife in Bangladesh

M Zakiul Islam, Md Ziaul Islam•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

In spite of the prominent Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, and many international treaties and agreements to curb the illicit wildlife trade, Bangladesh’s biodiversity is crashing. Illicit trade thrives because the country lacks the administrative, legislative, and technological capacity to implement legal safeguards. This commentary discusses the challenges and ways to prevent wildlife-related crimes and conserve biodiversity in B…

  • Childhood Experiences and Self-Control

    Jonathan R Brauer, Charles R Tittle et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 64

Survey data collected simultaneously in Dhaka, Bangladesh; Lviv, Ukraine; and a rural area of the Lviv region in Ukraine are used to examine hypothesized sources of self-control found in Gottfredson and Hirschi's self-control theory (G/H) and in coercion/social support theory (CSS). Analyses provide limited support for the G/H model and almost no support for the challenge posed by arguments concerning social support and self-control. Exploratory …
