Kinship surveillance
This article introduces the notion of kinship surveillance to capture the unilateral production of knowledge about familial relationships of migrants that gets weaponized by the state to control borders. I ask why, how, and when knowledge about migrants’ kinship relations has been made into a scale of border regimes, and how kinship surveillance has been historically enacted through different media technologies. I expose the historical discursive…
When was the ‘smart border’? Towards an agenda for historicising the technopolitics of migration and border control
In this article we outline a research agenda for historical inquiry into the technopolitics of migration and border control. We present an intervention against the notion that ‘smart borders’ are phenomena of an ahistorical present and instead seek to grapple with the longer and shorter, changing and permanent legacies, hauntings, and genealogies of the current moment of violent border regimes and their articulation through technologies. By askin…
Smart Ellis Island? Tracing techniques of automating border control
The buzzword “smart borders” captures the latest instantiation of media technologies constituting state bordering. This article traces historical techniques of knowledge-production and decision-making at the border, in the case of Ellis Island immigration station, New York City (1892–1954). State bordering has long been enabled by media technologies, engulfed with imaginaries of neutral, unambiguous, efficient sorting between desired and undesire…
Introduction
The media operations of postcolonial mobility regimes
This article analyses the communication activities of Filmstichting West Indië, which in the late 1940s and early 1950s produced 12 documentary propaganda films about Dutch colonial Suriname, and the resistance against these reductive representations in zines of the Surinamese migrant organization Vereniging Ons Suriname. We draw on hence unstudied archival material to dissect the role of media operations, as persuasive, strategic media productio…
Migration and the Deep Time of Media Infrastructures
While infrastructures of media and of migration currently converge in specific ways, in this commentary, we consider how these infrastructures always reflect distinctive moments in media history, as well as in migration history. An archaeological approach to infrastructure posits that media infrastructures do not spring into action fully formed, and neither is there ever a moment when they would be fully formed. We propose the perspective of deep…
Histories of humanitarian technophilia
Contemporary migration infrastructures commonly reflect imaginaries of technological solutionism. Fantasies of efficient ordering, administrating and limiting of refugee bodies in space and time through migration infrastructures are distinctive, but not novel as they draw on long historical lineages. Drawing on archival records, we present a case-study on post-World-War-II refugee encampments. By highlighting the deeply historical role of media i…
Uses of the Past in Refugee Documentaries in Sweden and Germany
Migration not only entangles people, cultures and societies but also histories and memories of diverse groups across national and cultural boundaries. The article focuses on mediated memory cultures of migration both theoretically and empirically. The first part discusses how cultural memories of migration in cross-medial flows of remediation can entangle ‘mnemonic imaginations’ of diverse groups within societies across time, cultures and media. …
We Demand Better Ways to Communicate
This article provides a historical perspective on media practices in refugee camps. Through an analysis of archival material emerging from refugee camps in Germany between 1945 and 2000, roles and functions of media practices in the camp experience among forced migrants are demonstrated. The refugee camp is conceptualized as a heterotopian space, where media practices took place in pre-digital media environments. The archival records show how med…
