Runningupthathill, revival and popular music fandom on TikTok
The fourth season of Stranger Things (2022) used Kate Bush’s 1985 single ‘Running up that Hill’ for a key narrative moment, propelling the song back into the charts. This resurgence also inspired new generations of listeners who turned to TikTok to perform covers, analyses or parodies of the song. While TikTok has been discussed as an emerging player in the music industry and as a space of agency and expression, there is still limited understandi…

This article examines Douyin's gamified features to investigate whether and how they facilitate online sociality. Drawing on literature on online sociality and gamification, this study demonstrates how Douyin's gaming elements introduce a playful dimension to social interactions and examines the implications of transforming sociality into a game. The space of immigrant discourse in the European press
In this article we offer a new analysis of two never previously combined datasets on press coverage of the “refugee crisis” in Europe in 2015. Consisting of twenty-nine newspapers from eleven countries, the data provides an unprecedented sample of the European press in the time of crisis. Using forty-six characteristics of frames, agents, aids and protective measures mentioned in the articles, we demonstrate an innovative analytic approach, where…
Gamers versus zombies? Visual mediation of the citizen/non-citizen encounter in Europe’s ‘refugee crisis’
This article identifies the visual representation of Europe’s “refugee crisis” in the media as a key dimension of the communicative architecture of the crisis and its aftermath. Effectively, it argues, the powerful, even iconic, imagery that the media produced and shared during the 2015 “crisis” affirmed ideological frames of incompatible difference, perpetually dividing European citizens and refugees. The article focuses on some of the fundament…
Fans Negotiating Performer Personas
I do not recall listening to ‘Melt’ before I embarked on my fieldwork in early 2012. I had known that vocaloid music was popular in Japan, but the scale of the phenomenon, which I had tracked via chart rankings, message boards and video channels, had eluded me; instead, I focused on inter- and intra-generational reception of mainstream idol pop. In February 2012, after several focus groups with Japanese music listeners, a pattern began to emerge:…
Figures of Crisis
This article examines how borders are discursively reproduced in representations of the 'refugee crisis' in the German media. Based on an extensive content and discourse analysis of German press representations in 2015 and 2016, we argue that the discourse of crisis obscures the reasons for migration and instead shifts the focus to the advantages and disadvantages that refugees are assumed to bring to their host country. More specifically, we con…
Voice and community in the 2015 refugee crisis
Drawing on a Content Analysis of 1200 news articles on the 2015 refugee ‘crisis’ across eight European countries, we address the question of whether and how refugees ‘speak' in the news. To this end, we categorized the language of these articles in terms of how they narrated the subjects, status and contexts of voice. Our analysis establishes three different linguistic practices through which the voice of refugees is managed in the news – what we…
