Eurovision and the City: “United by Music” Meets “Malmö against Genocide”
“United by Music” was the slogan of the 2024 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Malmö. However, the festive spirit of the event oddly contrasted with what was described as “the largest police operation in Sweden’s history” (Ivarsson, 2024). This operation was mobilized in response to the expected civil protests regarding Eurovision’s decision to welcome Israel’s participation, despite its ongoing genocidal war on Gaza. We examine the…
Maintaining Rental Housing as an Asset: Exploring Institutional Investors in Sweden’s Rental Market
Institutional investors have asserted significant power over rental markets across the transatlantic. However, their stronghold has been contested after rising interest rates in 2022. In this article I address the situated dimensions of the assetization of the built environment by examining the establishment of residential property investors in Sweden’s rental market with the aim to explore the enclosure of rental housing as an asset through refo…
Rent controls in comparative perspective: Reflections on an international symposium
In Scotland, the policy landscape around rent controls is rapidly evolving and full of uncertainty. At this critical moment, an international symposium in Edinburgh brought together activists and academics in similar contexts living with or fighting for rent controls from across Europe and North America. This contribution is organised around reflections from the participants on (1) the history of rent controls in their area; (2) the current rent …
Struggling for Housing Justice – New Theoretical and Methodological Approaches
How can struggles for housing justice act as a lens to expand housing researchers' understanding of the rental crisis and of the systems that underpin this crisis? By presenting papers from Sweden, Spain, Greece, Sweden, the UK, and Australia this special issue contributes with knowledge on how housing struggles can inform new theoretical and methodological approaches within the field of housing studies. In turn, the SI presents three tenets that…
Podcasting mundane practices of solidarity and resistance in post-migrant Sweden
Sweden is a post-migrant society where the suburbs of the largest cities in Sweden have become the symbol of failed integration in public debate and media. To broaden the representation, young people from the suburbs use podcasting to challenge and present their own perspectives. Based on content analysis and interviews with selected podcasters this article explores how they position themselves in relation to mainstream media and society by focus…
Renovations as an investment strategy: Circumscribing the right to housing in Sweden
There is an emergent field of writings on financialized landlords’ undertaking of apartment renovations as an investment strategy and its effect on housing inequalities. Seldom do these studies contextualize these tendencies within countries’ specific housing policy traditions. Therefore, through a qualitative case study in a neighbourhood in Sweden, this paper aims to uncover how private landlords undertake renovations as an investment strategy …
Flyktpodden: Migrant and Minority Voices that Matter
In recent years, podcasting has frequently functioned as a tool ‘to tell stories emanating from routinely marginalized lived experiences’ (Vrikki and Malik, 274). Flyktpodden is a podcast aiming to facilitate intergenerational dialogue about escape, persecution, and migration, thereby challenging mainstream stereotypes and generating understanding of different people’s lives. This article examines the podcast through the theoretical concepts of v…
They had already sold: Uncovering relations among the local state, the market and the public in the case of municipal housing privatization in Rosengård, Sweden
This paper uncovers the local state's complex intersections with the market and its multifaceted relations with the public through an in-depth qualitative case study of municipal housing privatization and urban renewal in one of the heartlands of the Swedish welfare state project, Rosengård in Malmö, Sweden. Drawing on the political-economic literature, I argue that housing privatization is entangled with complex interrelations among the (municip…
New media and processes of social change in contemporary Africa
Within the last two decades, many Africans, like most people around the world, have experienced dramatic changes in their access to and use of new information and communication technologies (ICT), including traditional mass media.Since its slow-paced introduction in the 1990s, mobile telephony has achieved remarkable and unprecedented popularity around the world. In several sub-Saharan countries like Botswana, Ghana and Kenya, mobile phones have r…
New media coming to Kapkoi
This article, by partly adopting a historical perspective, examines the introduction of new media in a Kenyan rural village, Kapkoi, and how it changes the communication ecology in the village. Further it explores how people in Kapkoi use and ascribe meaning to media. The article argues that categories such as gender, age and financial situation influence people’s access to and use of media and demonstrates how media use can simultaneously reinfo…
Spatial, Financial and Ideological Trajectories of Public Housing in Malmö, Sweden
Public housing has been one of the primary tools mobilized in Sweden historically to fulfil citizens’ right to housing. However, the nominally universal character of public housing in the Swedish context has increasingly been circumvented through processes of segregation, residualisation, gentrification and displacement. Furthermore, previous housing research points to the neoliberal shift of Sweden’s housing politics since the early 1990s, encom…
Domestic Connectivity: Media, Gender and the Domestic Sphere in Kenya
This article explores how increased media access and use influences Kenyan women’s everyday life and alters the domestic space. Based on 30 in-depth interviews with women in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya, the article demonstrates that women have incorporated newly gained media into their daily lives and routines. Increased media access has opened up the home and turned the domestic sphere from a secluded place into a connected space in which women ca…
Media and Communication between the Local and the Global
This editorial introduces the thematic issue of “Media and Communication between the Local and the Global”. It does so first by presenting the origin of this thematic issue: the Media, Globalization and Social Change division at the NordMedia 2017 conference. The thematic issue is then anchored theoretically through discussion of the widely conceived notion of mediation as a technological, symbolic and ethical process―highlighting the interest in…
Methodological challenges and lessons learned – deconstructing studies of social reality
Taking as point of departure three recently conducted empirical studies, the aim of this article is to theoretically and empirically discuss methodological challenges studying the interrelations between media and social reality and to critically reflect on the methodologies used in the studies. By deconstructing the studies, the article draws attention to the fact that different methods are able to grasp different elements of social reality. More…
Changing communication ecologies in rural, peri-urban and urban Kenya
This article aims to discuss changing media ecologies in rural, peri-urban and urban Kenya. The article is based on a comprehensive baseline survey of 799 individuals carried out in October 2014 in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. The survey recorded media access and media use in relation to demographic data. The findings suggest that media ecologies in rural, peri-urban as well as urban Kenya have undergone dramatic changes. The much hyped and unprece…
Community radio and peace-building in Kenya
In December 2007, violence broke out after the disputed general election in Kenya, which resulted in the death of 1100 Kenyans and left more than 660,000 displaced. Reports criticised media, especially vernacular media, for inflating the violence by using hate speech and incitement to violence, and suggested that Kenya would benefit from more community media to prevent history from repeating itself. This article focuses on how Koch FM and Pamoja …
