Authority and medical expertise
Arthur Conan Doyle's medical and writing careers intertwined and his work has a history of being read in the light of his medical expertise. He wrote at a time when the professionalisation and specialisation of medicine had resulted in an increasing distance between the profession and the public, yet general practitioners relied financially on maintaining good relationships with their patients and popular medical journalism proliferated. A variet…

An analysis of recruitment literature used by orders of Catholic religious teaching brothers in Australia, 1930 to 1960
The general focus of this paper is on religious teaching brothers, a very much neglected group within the body of historical scholarship on Catholic education generally. Notwithstanding the existence of an extensive body of literature of a hagiographic nature – much of it commissioned by male religious orders – as well as a small number of academic theses, brothers occupy a field wide open for research on many fronts, internationally and using a …

Surviving the Assault? The Australian Disability Movement and the Neoliberal Workfare State
This article provides an analysis of the key areas of struggle for the Australian disability movement during the Howard years of government. After providing a brief overview of the Australian disability movement and its historical development, we then move to situate the struggles of the Australian disability movement within the broader context of welfare to work, one of the central tenets of neoliberal social policy restructuring. From here, thr…
Students ‘at‐risk’ policy
Within a context of global reform agendas that promote economic ideologies in education the discourses surrounding ‘school failure’ have shifted from ‘individual risk’ to ‘a nation at‐risk’. Enhancing the quality of schooling through improving educational outcomes and standards for all, and thereby reducing ‘school failure,’ is simultaneously constructed as enhancing both social justice and a nation’s economic advantage in the global marketplace.…
Policy ‘partnerships’? Power dynamics in curriculum reform
In curriculum policy, discourses of ‘policy partnerships’ and ‘communities of practice’ have become increasingly prevalent and were reflected in Western Australian curriculum policy processes from the mid‐1990s to the late 2000s – a period of significant, highly contested change. This paper presents the findings of an empirical study into the impact of curriculum reform on the changing dynamics within and between the government and non‐government…

Technology as world building
This paper addresses the question of ‘What is technology?’ in order to develop a framework for the assessment and regulation of technology. I suggest that technology is how we build our world, drawing on the distinctions between the world and the earth, and between the human activities of labour, work and action, made by Hannah Arendt. Arendt's thought has a number of implications for how we should think about and assess the world, and thus techn…

What's in name ? Problems of meaning and denotation apropos of a corpus of Selk'nam personal names
This article treats problems which have long been subject to debate : do proper names have meanings ? Are they linguistic signs ? In an attempt to offer a response, a model is presented concerning the meaning of proper names, utilizing the Saussurian dichotomy parole I langue . This model distinguishes two categories of meaning and proposes that all proper names originally had a meaning and that some (still or do) have meaning or traces thereof. …
