Walking on eggshells: How disaffiliation narratives shape the meaning of Christian identity
The construction of Christian identity is an ongoing and communicative process, the study of which requires not just ‘taking talk seriously’, but constitutively. As Christian disaffiliation becomes more common in the United States and forms of Christianity are implicated in violent white nationalism, what it means to be a Christian is being openly contested through language about church. The qualitative research in this study draws on 45 semi-str…
Disinformation as Cultural Narrative: Conceptualizing Disinformation as Cross-Platform, Identity-Affirming, Cathartic Stories
Rather than framing disinformation as false facts which can be countered by true facts, we propose a model of disinformation as narrative by tracing three case studies of successful disinformation across Facebook and Twitter. As stories, disinformation disseminates throughout culture and exists at all levels of media and across genres. Using a dataset of content hosted on URLs shared widely on social media corresponding to U.S. left, right, and n…
Shapeshifters and Starseeds: Populist Knowledge Production, Generous Epistemology, and Disinformation on U.S. Conspiracy TikTok
This article investigates the intersection of identity, power, and knowledge production on U.S. ConspiracyTok, a genre of TikTok videos promoting conspiracy theories ranging from harmless speculation to harmful disinformation. Drawing on qualitative content analysis of 202 highly viewed videos, we examine how identity markers such as race and gender shape who is empowered or undermined in conspiratorial narratives, and how creators construct and …
A Certain Kind of Religion: A Critical-Qualitative Content Analysis of the Journal of Communication and Religion (2002–2022)
This critical-qualitative content analysis of the past 20 years of research articles in the Journal of Communication and Religion (JCR) reveals that the vast majority of JCR publications explores power-neutral questions. Additionally, many articles conflate “religion” and “Christianity” in theory and analysis, reinforcing the communication discipline’s epistemological bias toward White, masculine supremacy (Chakravartty et al., 2018). From this w…

Public Resistance to New Houses of Worship
How do residents evaluate zoning relief applications for new houses of worship? Do they decide based on the facility's expected level of nuisance, the religion of the house of worship, or the attitudes of neighbors and local officials? Using a conjoint survey experiment, this paper shows that religion is the most important predictor of resistance. People are more likely to resist new mosques than Christian churches, irrespective of other facility…

Breaking Up With Jesus
“Warning: blasphemous sacrilege ahead,” a pleasant, disembodied announcer warns the audience from the dark before introducing our “next comic” to the stand-up stage. Joseph Richards takes the microphone off the stand. Joseph Richards acknowledges the audience before beginning their stand-up routine: “Fucking exes, right??”Breaking Up with Jesus is an achingly familiar show for people who grew up in church. Solo performer Joseph Richards stages th…

Local rebels: How local governments get around federal and state laws to resist new mosques
Counties and municipalities are de jure subservient to higher-level governments. However, local governments often exercise powers reserved for state or federal governments and even engage in illegal acts. Such local noncompliance acts have been underexplored in the scholarly literature, especially regarding less visible methods. To fill this gap, this article uses cases of resistance to new mosques in Chicago’s suburbs to illustrate how municipal…
