Hating Theory Today
Drawing on nearly a decade of research, this essay investigates the hatred of theory on the political right. The phobic fascination with theory is over a century old. Yet, in recent years, it has taken on a new importance, with several figures assuming powerful roles in and around the U. S. government having made their names by attacking the Frankfurt School, French post-structuralism, critical race theory, and the ontologically dubious phenomeno…
Notes Toward a World Systems Theory of Platforms: Made in China and India on Amazon.com
This article examines the key role that Chinese and Indian entrepreneurs have played in the growth of Amazon and the varied ways in which they interact with its marketplace platform. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, I highlight differences in how Amazon addresses such entrepreneurs, in how they produce for Amazon, and how they brand their goods for global markets. These differences do not simply reflect distinct nation…
Hate-sharing: A case study of its prevalence and impact on Gab
This article brings frameworks from literary and cultural studies and methods from network science to bear on a central topic in political communication research: polarization. Recent studies have called into question the argument that digital “echo chambers” exacerbate polarization by preventing members from encountering a diversity of information and opinions. Using Gab, a far-right social media platform, as a case study, we offer further evide…
The Authoritarian Personality 2.0
This essay reframes the significance of the Authoritarian Personality study for the "fascism debates" and for the rapidly growing field of research on digitally mediated right-wing movements by rereading Theodor Adorno as a theorist of algorithms. Positing that the advent of "the society of algorithms" has transformed the nature of both authoritarianism and of personality, it returns to two empirical texts where Adorno analyzes two methods of cla…
Violence: An Anthology
Hamletkrisen: Kleist, Shakespeare, and Media Theory circa 1800
This essay draws on media archaeology and the history of translation in order to challenge two arguments that have long shaped interpretations of Heinrich von Kleist and German Romanticism: (1) that Kleist wrote in reaction to Kant and (2) that Shakespeare's plays provided a model of “naturalness” to poets of the Goethezeit. By placing Kleist's letters in conversation with the material history of the optical media to which they frequently allude,…
