Alternative Currencies
The development of money – manufactured coins – led to pervasive changes in economic exchange and in the structure of society. Coinage was a successful response to problems of earlier economic paradigms – barter and commodity money – but entrained problems of its own, including hoarding and disinvestment, and diminished social capital through weak ties. Contemporary alternative currencies, including recognition‐based currencies, community currenc…

Compared to affluent consumers, the consumption practices of poor and low-income consumers have received less attention in the global North, where they have been marginalized as flawed. This paper hopes to address this neglect by providing an exploratory profile of poor and low-income consumers in the United States. It will challenge that these consumers are flawed by explaining how they participate in consumer society via exploitative inclusion an…

Capturing community in mobility
The field of community informatics focuses on how information and communication technology can contribute to the development and sustainability of local communities. The ubiquity of mobile technologies, coupled with their affordances of connecting people and accessing information anytime, anywhere, brings new opportunities for community informatics research. These same affordances also entrain new methodological challenges in capturing and unders…
Public opinion formation for democratic decision-making in local governments
The legitimacy of public decision-making in democratic government is often challenged by its lack of capability for representing the public and their true preferences. This paper revisits existing methods of eliciting public opinions through the lens of structured public decision making, and highli ghts the importance of establishing public value and solid decision analysis before measuring public opinion. While deliberative mini-publics have bee…

The Catholic Calumet
In the first chapter of The Catholic Calumet the historian Tracy Neal Leavelle, an associate professor of history at Creighton University, writes that “it has been all too easy for scholars to deny the sincerity of missionaries and to dismiss the genuine engagement of Native peoples with Christianity” (p. 15). This historiographic dismissal resulted, he argues, from the ambiguity surrounding the nature of Jesuit conversion efforts and Indian conv…

Dependency Parsing Schemata and Mildly Non-Projective Dependency Parsing
We introduce dependency parsing schemata, a formal framework based on Sikkel's parsing schemata for constituency parsers, which can be used to describe, analyze, and compare dependency parsing algorithms. We use this framework to describe several well-known projective and non-projective dependency parsers, build correctness proofs, and establish formal relationships between them. We then use the framework to define new polynomial-time parsing alg…
The Boxers, China, and the World (review)
Reviewed by: The Boxers, China, and the World John M. Carroll The Boxers, China, and the World. Edited by Robert Bickers and R. G. Tiedemann. Lanham, Maryland: Rowman and Littlefield, 2007. Based on a conference held in June 2001, this collection places the Boxer crisis in its global context, aiming to show, as co-editor Robert Bickers explains, how the crisis was “a wholly modern episode and a wholly modern resistance to globalizing power, repre…

Designing the Next Generation of Distributed, Geocollaborative Tools
Geocollaboration is a new field of research that investigates how technology can support human–human collaboration with geospatial information. This paper considers the design issues inherent in distributed geospatial software. It looks at providing a non-spatial communication channel, supporting real-time synchronous awareness, designing interaction techniques, establishing common ground, and using floor control and attention techniques. Using e…
The neighborhood school in the global village
Access to the Internet is transforming classrooms in many ways. Students from anywhere can directly access people and information resources from anywhere else. Innovative educational materials can quickly become available throughout the world, not just throughout a school. Students can find up-to-date information and personal mentors without leaving their desks. Teachers can develop and participate in professional peer groups nationally, even int…

The Minimal Manual
The Minimal Manual was designed to address difficulties people have with state-of-the-art self-instruction manuals in learning to use powerful computing devices. It is briefer; it helps learners to coordinate their attention between the system and the manual; it specifically trains error recognition and recovery; it better supports reference use after training. In two experiments, the Minimal Manual was shown to afford more efficient learning pro…
Softening Up Hard Science
A source of intellectual overhead periodically encountered by scientists is the call to be "hard," to insure good science by imposing severe methodological strictures. Newell and Card (1985) have undertaken to impose such strictures on the psychology of humancomputer interaction. Although their discussion contributes to theoretical debate in humancomputer interaction by setting a reference point, their specific argument fails. Their program is un…
