Work and Life Under One Roof
Shifts in work patterns have intensified interest in work-family conflict, highlighting the critical role of supervisors’ leadership behaviors in shaping such tension. Unlike Western leadership, which emphasizes job-related support, Chinese benevolent leadership provides holistic care across both work and personal domains, potentially offering distinctive benefits. Drawing on culture and leadership perspective, this study examines how the two dim…
Association of Parent–Child Shared Reading with Psychosocial Problems Among Preschoolers
Studies have demonstrated the positive effects of shared reading (SR), but few have explored associations of SR with psychosocial development, and most have neglected the effects of father’s SR. This study examined the associations of age at dialogic parent – child SR initiation with psychosocial problems among preschoolers, explored the potential moderating role of marital conflicts in this association, and determined the distinct contributions …
Effect of Household Dysfunction in Childhood on General Health and Depression in Adolescence in Taiwan
The effect of childhood depression trajectories on sugar-sweetened beverage habit trajectories in adolescence
Birth cohort, sex and educational disparities in the trajectories of body mass index in Taiwan
Our findings suggest that younger generations, especially men, and lower educational level individuals, particularly women, have increasing levels of BMI. The influence of age and cohort effects together with sex and educational disparities on adiposity should be highlighted when designing future interventions and policies regarding overweight and obesity
Family environment characteristics and sleep duration in children
Resilience buffers the effects of sleep problems on the trajectory of suicidal ideation from adolescence through young adulthood
Sex differences in the trajectories of and factors related to extracurricular sport participation and exercise
We found distinct trajectories of ESPE from childhood to emerging adulthood for both sexes. The trajectories of ESPE for males and females, however, differ in terms of patterns and associated factors. Our findings suggest that efforts to increase ESPE should be initiated early, and may be made more effective by considering sex differences
Association between socioeconomic status and the trajectory of insufficient sleep
Pubertal Timing, Parenting Style, and Trajectories of Pornography Use in Adolescence
This study examined the effect of pubertal timing, parenting style, and peer behaviors on the trajectories of pornography use among adolescents. Data consisted of 1272 boys and 1210 girls, who completed at least three waves of pornography use questions from 7th to 12th grade (the year 2007 to 2012). Group-based trajectory modeling was applied to identify the trajectories of pornography use. Multinomial logistic regression and the Z-mediation meth…
The effects of family dysfunction trajectories during childhood and early adolescence on sleep quality during late adolescence
Transitions in sleep problems from late adolescence to young adulthood
Adolescence is a developmental period with high vulnerability to sleep problems. However, research identifying distinct patterns and underlying determinants of sleep problems is scarce. This study investigated discrete subgroups of, changes in, and stability of sleep problems. We also examined whether peer victimization influenced sleep problem subgroups and transitions in patterns of sleep problems from late adolescence to young adulthood. Sex d…
Childhood Adversity and Early Age Sexual Activity in Taiwan
The experience of childhood family adversity may affect adolescent sexual behavior, yet the variation in the types of adversities is unknown. We analyzed data from the Taiwan Education Panel Survey. In 2007, 18,995 students aged 18 years retrospectively reported the age of first sexual activity and the experiences of childhood adversities. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the association of childhood adversities with the timing…

Measuring Social Capital of Persons Residing in a Long-Term Psychiatric Institution
Background: Most studies support the association between social capital and health. However, none of the studies to date has focused on persons with psychiatric disability, and these past studies have drawbacks in conceptual development and the use of operational variables of social capital. Aims: This study develops measures and examines patterns of social capital for persons with psychiatric disability. Methods: Subjects (n = 273) were selected…
Community Attitudes Towards the Mentally Ill
Background: In Taiwan, to strengthen the psychiatric rehabilitation system has been one of the primary goals of the Department of Health since 1985. Unfortunately, this endeavor has not been successful and it is believed that one of the barriers is social stigma towards the mentally ill. However, to date no national survey has been conducted for Chinese population on the focal topic using a random sample. Aims: In this study we explored the attit…
Family at the Bedside
Using qualitative and quantitative data collected from 70 patients in three hospitals in Taiwan, between 1990 and 1991, this article documents the pervasive and intensive involvement of patients' families in hospital care. Two hypotheses are examined: (1) that family involvement is a result of the strength of Chinese family ties; and (2) that the involvement is necessary due to inadequate hospital care. The results suggest that intensive and exte…
