    Open Access•Libora Oates-Indruchová, Ildiko Asztalos Morell et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Women s Studies•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted individuals to devise new temporal strategies in various spheres of their lives as a result of the spatial regulations imposed during the first lockdown. We apply Lisa Suckert’s theoretical model of ‘the capitalist time regime’ in the analysis of 68 interviews with parents of schoolchildren in seven European countries conducted during the first COVID-19 lockdown in spring 2020. We examine actors’ agency and capabili…

What does discomfort do? What kinds of spaces, boundaries, and power relations are generated by comfort, and for whom? In this introduction to the themed section, we trace comfort/discomfort across borders and through spaces to see when and how these emotions and affective relations generate life and growth, and when they instead circumscribe possibilities. The introduction and the contributions to this issue question ‘comfort feminism’ to consid…

  • Liberty call at sunset: U.S. military retiree bars and the outsourced reproduction of ageing masculinities in Subic Bay, Philippines

    Open Access•M Hawkins•ARTICLE•Cultural Geographies•2021

This article examines the gendered service economy of bars and restaurants catering to ageing US military retirees in Olongapo City, Philippines. During the Cold War, Olongapo housed Subic Bay Naval Base, one of the largest overseas US military installations, and today thousands of former American service members have retired here. A focus on retiree bars reveals how Filipina bartenders and waitresses facilitate an ageing masculinity for these ex…

    Open Access•M Hawkins•ARTICLE•Durkheimian Studies•2004•References: 3

Durkheim never repudiated or even revised the theory formulated in the Division, which was in its third edition by the time of the publication of his last major work. He did, however, admit privately to Mauss to having 'many hesitations' about bringing out a second edition, although he gave no indication of the nature of these reservations (1998a:277, 283). Furthermore his anthropological knowledge became more extensive after the publication of t…

  • Corporatism and third way discourses in inter-war France

    M Hawkins•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ideologies•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 6

Since the French Revolution, theorists from across the entire ideological spectrum have looked to some version of corporatism as a means of reconstituting the French political system and redefining the relationship between state, individual, and civil society. During the inter-war period these efforts were renewed as intellectuals struggled with the problems posed by economic and political crises and social division. This produced a rich vein of …

  • The foundations of fascism: The world views of Drieu la Rochelle

    M Hawkins•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ideologies•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 12

This paper is an exploration of the world views which grounded the political analyses and judgements of the French fascist intellectual Pierre Drieu la Rochelle. After rejecting the claim that Drieu adopted a Social Darwinist world view, the paper argues that there are actually two world views discernible in his political writings and novels. There is a deterministic perspective in which human action is subordinated to the inexorable workings of …

  • Durkheim's sociology and theories of degeneration

    M Hawkins•ARTICLE•Economy and Society•1999•Cited by: 3•References: 32

This Paper explores the relationshipbetween theories of degeneracy inspired by medicine and psychiatry in the nineteenth century and the sociological theory of Emile Durkheim. After briefly reviewing the main themes of degeneracy theory, there follows an analysis of Durkheim's writings of the 1880s and 1890s and 1890s on crime, suicide and birth-rates. The paper argues, first, that Durkheim's relationship to degeneracy theory is considerably more…
