Economic nostalgia
The rise of 'new populism' is commonly explained by two opposing approaches known as cultural backlash and economic deprivation. Their antagonism perpetuates a dichotomous understanding of economy versus identity. This article contributes to scholarly attempts to overcome this dichotomy by introducing the concept of economic identity. It suggests to bring 'the economic' back into culturalist explanations as a discursive motif that can be charged …
Eine Neuordnung der Zeit? Zum Verhältnis von Zeitlichkeit, Kapitalismus und Staat im Zeichen der Pandemie
Does the corona pandemic allow for a departure from the capitalist time regime? Can the crisis induce a more sustainable order of time? This article looks at the COVID-19 pandemic and the state interventions in response to it from the perspective of sociology of time and economic sociology. It shows that the social and economic disruptions attributed to the pandemic can be understood as the result of a collision of opposing temporal logics. In or…
Back to the Future. Sociological Perspectives on Expectations, Aspirations and Imagined Futures
Since the 1990s sociology has rediscovered a theme already present in the discipline's foundational theories: the salience of future perceptions for social action. This article provides an overview of "the sociology of imagined futures", a diverse but still scattered research field explicitly engaged with expectations, aspirations and future orientations. A review of recent scholarship emphasizes how an imagined future perspective is related to a…
The future as a social fact. The analysis of perceptions of the future in sociology
The coronavirus and the temporal order of capitalism
The coronavirus is not only a medical threat but also collides with the temporal logic inherent to capitalism. While capitalism demands constant growth, acceleration and efficiency, the outbreak urges societies to reduce, slow down and be patient. This article provides a sociological comment on the pandemic that focuses on the role of time and temporality. It explores the multiple ways in which the required responses to Covid-19 are at odds with …
Playing the Double Game
Moralized markets are economic markets in which moral aspects are explicitly used to legitimize decisions. Companies involved in such markets have to cope simultaneously with opposing logics: While they strive for economic growth, their existence is bound to their moral integrity, too. This chapter investigates how ecopreneurs manage this inherent conflict of moralized markets. Based on interviews, documentary analysis and sample purchases, an em…
Unravelling ambivalence
Moralised markets are often referred to as ethical consumption markets. They are supposed to relieve a source of major distress in capitalist societies: the conflict between morality and economy. But under what conditions do these markets grow, and when do they stagnate? Deviating from the dominant focus on external constraints, this article emphasises the intrinsic ambivalence of moralised markets. Being caught between moral and economic exigenc…
Same same but different.
Entlang ihrer Entstehungskontexte, theoretischer und me…
