  • I am a culprit’: Neoliberal public health discourses versus social risks for HIV within marriages in Kenya

    Open Access•Roseanne Njiru•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2020

Rates of HIV within marriages in Kenya remain high. While critical public health scholars have argued that socio-structural contexts shape HIV vulnerability, public health emphasizes neoliberal health management approaches that prioritize individual responsibility to avoid HIV risks. This article examines Kenya’s marital fidelity campaign as a manifestation of neoliberal health governance techniques. It considers the sexual morality of the campai…

  • Social networks, gender and HIV within marriages in Kenya

Roseanne Njiru•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2019

This study explores how couples' social networks and spaces of interactions are implicated in the (re)production of gender and gender relations and how this, consequently, shape…

    Roseanne Njiru, B Purkayastha•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 21

Drawing on the experiences and practices of married women and men in Kenya, we demonstrate how intersectionality is expressed through the social organization of space to shape particular patterns of femininity and masculinity and enable, mostly, men’s infidelity and the possibility of the HIV risk. HIV mitigation policies focus mostly on altering…

  • Outsiders in their own nation: Electoral violence and politics of 'internal' displacement in Kenya

    Open Access•Roseanne Njiru•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article foregrounds the overlapping continuum of local to global fault lines that structure the human security experiences of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kenya. Drawing on data from the 2007-2008 electoral violence-induced displacement of ethnic minorities in the Rift Valley region, the article discusses how the intersections of ethnicity, national politics, land rights, and global humanitarian politics on displacement positioned …
