Lost in 'Translation-Work
This article explores the language negotiations among a group of Norwegian Christian Charismatic disaffiliates from a Facebook community called 'The Journey' (no. 'Reisen'). The analysis is based on 24 in-depth interviews and examines specific language practices of the disaffiliates, which I call translation-work. Translation-work involves substituting the religious meaning of Christian Charismatic concepts with secular meaning, allowing the term…
“Some days Iʼm an Atheist and Other Days Iʼm a Believer”
This article explores disaffiliation experiences of 16 Norwegian ex-charismatics. I present data that show that binaries of religion and non-religion miss large parts of the disaffiliation experiences of the informants. Through focusing on variations of ambivalence among the informants, this article shows the need for further developing nuanced and precise understandings of the spaces between religion and non-religion. Using life-story interviews…
Phantoms of Faith-Experiences of Rupture and Residue of Amputated Religiosity among Norwegian Ex-Charismatic Christians
This article explores non/religious emotions and experiences among a group of high-cost Christian charismatic disaffiliates in Norway. It is a case study of members of the Facebook community "The Journey" (no. "Reisen"). With a qualitative approach, it uses lifestory interviews from 24 ex-Charismatics to describe their experiences of what I call phantoms of faith. The article gives thick descriptions of the disaffiliates' negotiations between cur…
