Shared care and gender identity support in Primary Care
This article addresses the complex issues surrounding trans youths' shared care perceived by parents in primary care settings in the UK. The analyses in this article draws on qualitative data derived from an online survey of 153 parents with trans children. Through the conceptual framework of healthcare assemblages, findings suggest that quality shared care for trans youth is based upon transient service relationships inherent in their healthcare…
Hierarchies of Masculinity and Lad Culture on Campus
Research on lad culture and gender-based violence (GBV) in student communities has examined hypermasculine gender performances, with little attention paid to hierarchies of masculinity. We explore lad culture by analysing qualitative, in-depth interviews with students. Our findings challenge simplistic constructions of 'good guys' as allies/protectors in opposition to hypermasculinised, deviant 'bad guys'. We demonstrate how such binary construct…
The Sage Handbook of Global Sexualities
The domain of sexualities has occupied the imaginary of the forbidden and the unspoken since early times. Taboo became an umbrella category to describe things best left unspoken, hidden behind closed doors or buried in the most intimate secret thoughts and desires. For decades and still today, medical doctors and spiritual leaders remain the guardians of that which we dare not speak. This book is about sexualities and it emerges at a time when th…
School Cultures and Trans and Gender-diverse Children
In the United Kingdom, trans and gender-diverse children are increasingly visible within the school system. We examined data obtained from 23 parents who are supportive of their trans and gender-diverse children. We draw on the insights of Freire (2000), who suggested that critical education in its widest sense is a basic element of progressive social change. Parents face interpersonal and structural limit-situations (Freire, 2000) while supporti…
A Balancing Act
This article extends our understanding of how university students make sense of, and respond to, sexual violence in the night-time economy (NTE). Based on semi-structured interviews with 26 students in a city in England, we examine students' constructions of their experiences of sexual violence within the NTE, exploring their negotiations with, and resistance to, this violence. Building upon theories of postfeminism, we interrogate the possibilit…
Genderqueer(ing)
Deconstructionism as a method in transgender studies has been useful to collapse concepts and ideas about (trans) gender and sexuality. In spite of the usefulness of undoing the gender and sexuality canon, by way of concentrating on transgender practices, the resulting deconstructions often leave us with no place to go. This article develops an analysis of transsexual and genderqueer people’s bodily aesthetic assemblages, challenging theorization…
Democratising diagnoses? The role of the depathologisation perspective in constructing corporeal trans citizenship
In the scope of the current revision process of the diagnostic manuals Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Other Health Problems (ICD), an international trans depathologisation movement has emerged that demands, among other claims, the removal of a diagnostic classification of gender transition processes as a mental disorder. The call for submissions launched by …
Introduction to the themed issue
This themed issue, ‘Trans* policy, practice and lived experience within a European context’, emerges at a time when global understandings of gender are rapidly changing across social, cultural, political, policy and legal spheres. The understanding of gender as the materialisation of the categories of male or female that are fixed at birth is in flux, and this issue speaks to these shifts at conceptual, procedural and empirical levels
Patients' and clinicians' experiences and perceptions of the primary care management of insomnia
BACKGROUND: Insomnia is common leading to patients with sleep problems often presenting to primary care services including general practice, community pharmacies and community mental health teams. Little is known about how health professionals in primary care respond to patients with insomnia. AIM: We aimed to explore health professionals' and patients' experiences and perceptions of the management of insomnia in primary care. DESIGN: We used a q…
Facilitating LGBT Medical, Health and Social Care Content in Higher Education Teaching
Increasingly, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) health care is becoming an important quality assurance feature of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare in Britain. While acknowledging these very positive developments, teaching LGBT curricula content is contingent upon having educators understand the complexity of LGBT lives. The study adopted a qualitative mixed method approach. The study investigated how and in what ways barrie…
Trans Intelligentsia
Katie Herzog's Transtextuality (Senate Bill 48), an installation “depicting 48 portraits of transgender men and women of letters,” took on the mammoth task of displaying portraits of trans pioneers who represent transgender intelligentsia. The celebration of her Western “sitters” is an impressive display, and their academic work has no doubt contributed vast and wide-reaching insights into mine and the lives of some of my trans sisters, brothers,…
