Cannabis Legalization and Cannabis Use Disorder by Sex in Veterans Health Administration Patients, 2005–2019
BACKGROUND: Understanding sex differences in the effects of cannabis legalization and increasing risk for cannabis use disorder (CUD) is important. We hypothesized that from 2005 to 2019, increases in CUD prevalence due to state medical or recreational cannabis laws (MCL; RCL) would differ among male and female veterans treated at the U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA), with greater increases among females. METHODS: Data obtained through t…
Examining the association between county racialised economic segregation and fatal overdose in US counties, 2018–2022
Background Between 2022 and 2023, overdose mortality decreased among non-Hispanic (NH) white people but stayed the same or increased among people of colour in the USA. County racialised economic segregation may contribute to overdose mortality. Methods We used a Bayesian spatiotemporal approach to assess the association between racialised economic segregation quintile and overdose deaths (overall and race-stratified) in 3133 US counties from 2018…
Improving health and housing outcomes through a simulation and economic model
Introduction: Homelessness in the United States increased every year since 2016, with a 38% increase from 2023 to 2024. Much of the increase is attributable to rising home and rent costs, economic hardship caused by the recent pandemic, and the ending of protective legislation. Notably, people who experience homelessness have an increased risk of substance use disorders, HIV infection and poorer HIV outcomes than people who are stably housed. The…
Cannabis Use and Cannabis Use Disorder Among U.S. Adults with Psychiatric Disorders
BACKGROUND: Rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) have increased disproportionately among Veterans Administration (VA) patients with psychiatric disorders compared to patients with no disorder. However, VA patient samples are not representative of all U.S. adults, so results on disproportionate increases in CUD prevalence could have been biased. To address this concern, we investigated whether disproportionate increases in the prevalence of cannab…
Cannabis Legalization and Opioid Use Disorder in Veterans Health Administration Patients
The results of this cohort study suggest that MCL and RCL enactment was associated with greater OUD prevalence in VHA patients over time, with the greatest increases among middle-aged and older patients and those with chronic pain. The findings did not support state cannabis legalization as a means of reducing the burden of OUD during the ongoing opioid epidemic
Sometimes I’m interested in seeing a fuller story to tell with numbers” Implementing a forecasting dashboard for harm reduction and overdose prevention
Using an implementation framework within the larger study allowed us to identify multi-level and contextual factors affecting the early implementation of a forecasting dashboard within the PROVIDENT community trial. Additional investments to build organizational and community capacity may be required to create the optimal implementation setting and integration of forecasting tools

Municipal socioeconomic environment and recreational cannabis use in Mexico
The relationship of medical and recreational cannabis laws with opioid misuse and opioid use disorder in the USA
Comparing individuals in MCL alone states to those in states without such laws, we found an inconsistent pattern of decreased odds of opioid outcomes, which were more pronounced among people reporting cannabis use. The pattern did not hold for individuals in RCL states. In line with a substitution-oriented perspective, findings suggests that MCLs may be associated with reductions in opioid use among people using cannabis but additional work to re…
Considerations for the epidemiological evaluation of hyperlocal interventions
Characterizing opioid overdose hotspots for place-based overdose prevention and treatment interventions
Neighborhoods with increased prevalence of housing instability and poverty are at highest risk of overdose. The high availability of social services in overdose hotspots presents an opportunity to work with established organizations to prevent overdose deaths

Naloxone expansion is not associated with increases in adolescent heroin use and injection drug use
Changes in arrests following decriminalization of low-level drug possession in Oregon and Washington
This analysis demonstrates that it is possible for state drug decriminalization policies to dramatically reduce arrests for drug possession without increasing arrests for violent crimes, potentially reducing harm to people who use drugs and their communities. Additional research is needed to determine whether these legal reforms were associated with changes in overdose rates and other drug-related harms

State-Level History of Overdose Deaths Involving Stimulants in the United States, 1999‒2020
Objectives. To examine the state-level history of US overdose deaths involving stimulants with and without opioids from 1999 to 2020. Methods. We used death certificate data from the National Center for Health Statistics to categorize deaths into 4 groups of interest: cocaine with and without opioids, and psychostimulants with and without opioids. We used a Bayesian multiple change point model to describe the timing and magnitude of changes in ov…
Adolescents’ Use of Free Time and Associations with Substance Use from 1991 to 2019
Background: Understanding time trends in risk factors for substance use may contextualize and explain differing time trends in substance use. Methods: We examined data (N = 536,291; grades 8/10/12) from Monitoring the Future, years 1991-2019. Using Latent Profile Analyses, we identified six time use patterns: one for those working at a paid job and the other five defined by levels of socialization (low/high) and engagement in structured activitie…
Experiences of Online Bullying and Offline Violence‐Related Behaviors Among a Nationally Representative Sample of US Adolescents, 2011 to 2019
BACKGROUND: Being bullied online is associated with being bullied in school. However, links between online bullying and violence-related experiences are minimally understood. We evaluated potential disparities in these associations to illuminate opportunities to reduce school-based violence. METHODS: = 73 074). We used survey-weighted logistic and multinomial models to examine links between online bullying and five school-based violence-related e…
Explaining US Adolescent Depressive Symptom Trends Through Declines in Religious Beliefs and Service Attendance
Has the treatment gap for opioid use disorder narrowed in the U.S
Despite some progress in expanding access to MOUD, a substantial gap between OUD prevalence and treatment receipt highlights the critical need to increase access to evidence-based services
Time use and associations with internalizing symptoms from 1991 to 2019 among US adolescents
Shifts in adolescent time use do not explain increases in depressive and other internalizing symptoms, which increased across different patterns of time use. Levels of internalizing symptoms were highest among those with low socialization, low recreational engagement, and those working substantial hours. Encouraging socialization, engagement in recreational activities, and providing mental health resources for isolated adolescents may reduce inte…
Applications of agent-based modeling in trauma research
Trauma, violence, and their consequences for population health are shaped by complex, intersecting forces across the life span. We aimed to illustrate the strengths of agent-based modeling (ABM), a computational approach in which population-level patterns emerge from the behaviors and interactions of simulated individuals, for advancing trauma research; Method: We provide an overview of agent-based modeling for trauma research, including a discus…
Neighborhood Characteristics and Disability in Older Adults
The urban environment may have a substantial impact on whether an older adult with a given level of functional impairment is able to age actively and remain independent
Understanding the Rural–Urban Differences in Nonmedical Prescription Opioid Use and Abuse in the United States
Nonmedical prescription opioid misuse remains a growing public problem in need of action and is concentrated in areas of US states with large rural populations such as Kentucky, West Virginia, Alaska, and Oklahoma. We developed hypotheses regarding the influence of 4 factors: (1) greater opioid prescription in rural areas, creating availability from which illegal markets can arise; (2) an out-migration of young adults; (3) greater rural social an…
