We should nudge clinicians and trainees to participate in health professions education programmes
Health Professional Education (HPE) programmes, such as mentorship, are widely regarded as being advantageous to the personal and professional development of clinicians and trainees. Involvement in a mentoring relationship is associated with positive outcomes for both mentees and mentors, including improved career preparation, increased career success, higher job satisfaction and reduced risk of burnout. Despite these data, a minority of trainees…
Mentorship in medicine is a Complex opportunity
Mentorship is now recognized as essential to the personal and professional development of physicians. Over the past decade, it has become a common theme in medical education literature, and through this our understanding of mentorship has evolved. Despite this progress, we believe that the prevailing reductionist view of mentorship is oversimplified and may hinder further advances in this space. Instead, we propose that mentorship be viewed throu…
Why we should view the decision of medical trainees to cheat as the product of a person‐by‐situation interaction
Personal career decisions during medical training are not complicated, they are complex
We should use learning rather than short-term performance to evaluate the effectiveness of undergraduate remediation
You can’t build a long-term future on short-term thinking.- Billy CoxFor those involved in residency training, it is reasonable to expect that incoming trainees are free of unresolved deficiencies
Why we need to keep fixing our unbroken education programs
The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.- John F. KennedyAt our centre, we recently switched the model for our undergraduate medical education program despite the fact that our previ

Toward Walter Benjamin's: Theory of the Novel
This essay proposes the thesis that the literary critical project launched by Walter Benjamin in his early work (from 1914 to 1922) opens an important and complex line of inquiry into the novel that has not been sufficiently appreciated—either in the reception of his work or with regard to the study of the novel more generally. Benjamin's early criticism does not contain a fully developed and comprehensive theory of the novel like the one offered…

How much is enough? Proposing achievement thresholds for core EPAs of graduating medical students in Canada
Purpose The transition towards Competency-Based Medical Education at the Cumming School of Medicine was accelerated by the reduced clinical time caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study was to define a standard protocol for setting Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA) achievement thresholds and examine their feasibility within the clinical clerkship. Methods Achievement thresholds for each of the 12 AFMC EPAs for graduating Ca…

Summative Assessment of Interprofessional “Collaborative Practice” Skills in Graduating Medical Students: A Validity Argument
PURPOSE: To describe how the authors developed an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) station to assess aspects of collaborative practice competency and how they then assessed validity using Kane's framework. METHOD: After piloting the collaborative practice OSCE station in 2015 and 2016, this was introduced at the Cumming School of Medicine in 2017. One hundred fifty-five students from the class of 2017 and 22 students from the clas…

Walter Benjamin’s Philology of Life: Methodological Reflections on “Two Poems by Friedrich Hölderlin” Kevin McLaughlin (bio) The connection between philology and life is central to Walter Benjamin’s early literary criticism. Biophilology:Walter Benjamin's Literary Critical Legacy Kevin McLaughlin (bio) I If, as is maintained in what follows, literary history is in the depths of a crisis, this crisis must be seen as part of a much broader one. —Walter Benjamin, "Literary History and Literary Science" When Benjamin wrote in the spring of 1931 of a "crisis" in literary history, he was returning to an issue that had preoccupied him since his student days (GS 3: 284; SW 2…
Culture and Messianism: Disinterestedness in Arnold
This article proposes a reconsideration of Matthew Arnold's concept of disinterestedness in the context of the later writings of Kant and of recent discussions of messianism, in particular Giorgio Agamben's study of St. Paul. It argues that disinterestedness in Arnold is a form of what Kant calls "moral fanaticism" based on the preservation of self-consciousness as the foundation of ethical and political obligation. By contrast, Arnold's most imp…
On Poetic Reason of State: Benjamin, Baudelaire, and the Multitudes
The paper starts from Walter Benjamin's interpretation of the phrase "reason of state" that Paul Valéry applies to Charles Baudelaire's poetry. After exploring how this phrase points to the interconnections between poetry and politics in Benjamin's writings on lyric, from the early essay on Hölderlin to the later commentaries on Baudelaire, it goes on to explicate Baudelaire's reading of a book on the concept of reason of state by the Italian phi…
