Between 1938 and 1941 the United States entered what might have turned into a full-scale “red scare,” one equaling the post–World War II scare and that in many ways provided a miniature prefiguration of the latter. The major events on the national and international levels that touched off the 1938–1941 scare were, first, the massively publicized activities of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, chaired by reactionary Texas Democratic r…

  • Political Repression in 19th Century Europe

Robert Justin Goldstein•BOOK•Political Repression in 19th…•2013

Originally published in 1983. The nineteenth century was a time of great economic, social and political change. As Europe modernized, previously ignorant and apathetic elements in the population began to demand political freedoms. There was pressure also for a freer press, for the rights of assembly and association. The apprehension of the existing elites manifested itself in an intensification of often brutal form of political repression. The fi…

  • Political Theater Censorship in Nineteenth-Century France in Comparative European Perspective

    Open Access•Robert Justin Goldstein•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2010

Nineteenth-century French political theater censorship was fundamentally in the mainstream of continental European drama censorship, yet it also reflected unique French characteristics. As elsewhere, because theater was viewed as so important during this era of European history, stage censorship occupied a huge amount of the time and energy of French officials and especially focused on proposed texts that were feared as threatening the existing p…

Robert Justin Goldstein•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2007

On the night of May 4, 1886, a bomb exploded in the ranks of Chicago police, who had just ordered the dispersal of a peaceful rally called to protest the police shootings of about six strikers at the McCormick Reaper Works the previous day. The explosion was followed by a fusillade of police shots at the crowd, and, according to some accounts, by return fire from some of the protesters. Seven police died as the result of the events of May 4, and …

Steinfeld, a law professor at the State University of New York-Buffalo, continues to explore the emergence of the modern conception of “free labor.” His primary argument here is that the general belief that labor in the past (or, for that matter, in the present) was/is either “unfree” (as in slavery or serf…

The most significant addition to the methodological toolbag of social scientists since the days of Aristotle has no doubt been the increasingly widespread use of quantitative data and techniques during the post-World War II era. The explanations for the quantitative revolution are a mixture of the academic equivalent of the sacred and the profane, of motivations scientifically sound and those less so.
