  • Reflecting Team Group Therapy and Its Congruence with Feminist Principles: A Focus on African American Women

    Kim Marie Vaz•ARTICLE•Women & Therapy•2005•Cited by: 5

The author suggests that the reflecting team approach to group therapy can enhance and further the goals of feminist counseling. Specific strategies that help accomplish this goal include allowing clients to act as consultants and rotating the focus of the team from session to session so that each member has multiple opportunities to speak the language of agency. An illustration of an individual session demonstrates how women of color, in particu…

The Decade of Behavior provides an opportunity to reflect on the need for psychologists to develop a “diversity mindfulness” in their education, training, and research activities, a need that has never been more urgent. In this article, we focus on the lives of women of color to illustrate diversity-mindful feminist principles that may inform research and program development related to other aspects of diversity. We discuss perspectives and prior…

In noteworthy section of The Idea of Africa (1994) dealing with contemporary African art, V.Y. Mudimbe has both criticized the limited scope of the divisions proposed by Marshall W. Mount in African Arts: The Years Since 1920 (1973) and set out an illuminating categorization of his own. According to Mudimbe's critique, the categories defined by Mount (traditional, Christian, souvenir, and new art) are useful as a first approach to African arts (1…

  • Racial Aliteracy: White Appropriation of Black Presences

    Kim Marie Vaz•ARTICLE•Women & Therapy•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In this paper, I discuss how White people place themselves at the center of African American Women's Studies. Specifically, I explore how Whites can make African American Women's Studies ultimately serve the needs of a White power base. I also discuss how African American women continue to allow White people to occupy the center of our lives and research because all too often African-based beliefs and values do not form our core identities. Afric…
