Safe to Speak, Teach, and Research? Experiences of Reprisals in Danish Academia
In connection with a research project involving two external partners, I was threatened into signing a falsified document, pressured and physically intimidated by management to accept third-party data in direct violation of our written contract, and subjected to a very aggressive HR consultant who tried to place the blame for the problem on me. I asked to be dismissed, but management refused, which meant that a full year passed before I was final…
The makings of the debtor: Morality tales and economic reasoning in contemporary neoliberal societies
This article explores both how the debtor became a key actor in contemporary society and relatedly how indebtedness went from being a deplorable, exceptional condition to be avoided to a normal everyday precondition of modern life. Personifying the credit side of futurity, possibilities, enjoyment or accumulation, the debtor is an ambivalent and precarious actor, never an end unto itself, but always a means to something else. The debtor is always…
Den reaktionære tanke
This article explores the basic arguments of reactionary thinking. I argue that reactionary thought originates in an opposition to the Enlightenment and stayed fairly consistent since then, though with local variations around the core. The article first discusses a number of books on reactionary thought before developing the thesis of the genesis of reactionary thought in and around the Enlightenment, not least the opposition to the idea of man a…
Proprietors and parasites: Dependence and the power to accumulate
This article introduces the idea of ‘dependence subtexts’ to explain how the stories that we encounter in property theory and public rhetoric function to make some actors appear ‘independent’, and thus capable of acquiring property in their own right, while making other actors appear ‘dependent’ and thus incapable of acquiring property. The argument develops the idea of ‘dependence subtexts’ out of the work of legal scholar Carol Rose and politic…

An Intellectual History of Terror
This book investigates terrorism and anti-terrorism as related and interacting phenomena, undertaking a simultaneous reading of terrorist and statist ideologists in order to reconstruct the 'deadly dialogue' between them. This work investigates an extensive array of violent phenomena and actors, trying to broaden the scope and ambition of the history of terrorism studies. It combines an extensive reading of state and terrorist discourse from vari…

Enemy of Humanity: The Anti-Piracy Discourse in Present-Day Anti-Terrorism1
This article explores the anti-pirate discourse as a feature of the present war on terror and the more general connection between state and non-state violence. The anti-pirate discourse in ancient and early modern history is explored where piracy was one of the main threats coming from the private use of force. The anti-piracy reference is used in the present anti-terror discourse to open the way for a more militaristic approach to fighting terro…
The Anarchist and the Partisan-Two Types of Terror in the History of Irregular Warfare
This article deals with the anarchist and the partisan as forerunners of contemporary terrorism. It investigates their different relationship to the state, the anarchist trying to replace it and the partisan trying to conquer it and what that means in terms of resistance, critique, and position on the use of force. The article is both theoretical and historical, trying to place the anarchist and the partisan within their different time epochs and…
Where did Nazism come from? Tibet: Interview with John Gray
The interview revolves around the idea that Al Qaeda is a distinctively modern phenomenon dependent upon modern and Western ideas of transformation of the human condition through mass violence. Meanwhile, the USA and Europe are deeply superstitious about their own unique position in the world. Professor John Gray outlines a clash of modernisms, the one not less ambitious or global in nature than the other. He applies an analysis of modernity upon…
Delinquents, Troublemakers, Pirates and Gangsters: New Wars in the Postpolitical Borderland
This article tries to actualize Carl Schmitt's critique of liberal internationalism in what the author calls the 'liberal globalist paradigm', which substitutes a post-sovereign humanitarian-moralist discourse for political arguments. This discourse helps shape a new inequality in the interstate system based on the ability to invoke humanist language; an ability that is systematically skewed in favour of Western states. The post-sovereign discour…
A World Without Substance’: Carl Schmitt and the Counter-Enlightenment
This article deals with the counter-Enlightenment in the works of Joseph de Maistre, Juan Donoso Cortés and Carl Schmitt. Political theology is in this context the assertion of a direct and inevitable connection between religion and politics. Secularism has therefore meant a decline in political authority and sovereignty. The purpose of the article is to explore counter-enlightenment arguments in two early works of Carl Schmitt: Politische Romant…
Hvorledes globaliseringen af Europa overvinder barbariet’: Den liberale brug af globaliseringsbegrebet til afpolitisering af nation og stat
This article critically examines the way some liberals understand and use the concept of globalization as a way beyond the nation state. Liberalism is seen as defined by the principle of depoliticization, which is another way of saying that liberalism seeks to construct the political order in a way that is violence-free. The problematic element of this otherwise praiseworthy goal is the inherent neglect of the continued role of power and violence…
