  • Humes definitions of virtue

    Open Access•Haitao Qu, Hsueh Qu•ARTICLE•Noûs•2025

Hume offers not one, but two definitions of virtue: a more famous one in terms of usefulness or agreeability to the self or to others, and a second in terms of eliciting approbation or disapprobation from spectators. Some scholars endorse the former definition as the more fundamental one; others endorse the latter as more fundamental. This paper argues that neither definition is more fundamental than the other. The two definitions are distinct bu…

  • Hume’s Regulative Epistemology in the Enquiry

    Open Access•Haitao Qu•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Philosophy•2024

This article argues that Hume’s epistemology changes in an important respect between the Treatise and the Enquiry : the degree to which these epistemologies are practical epistemologies. This article focuses on one particular aspect of this latter comparison, that is, Hume’s responses to skepticism in the Treatise and Enquiry. It argues that the Enquiry ’s response to skepticism offers a practical epistemology that teaches us, in relatively concr…

  • Association of cardiovascular health and periodontitis: A population-based study

    Open Access•Haitao Qu, Shengnan Zhang•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Our study suggests that better cardiovascular health, as indicated by higher CVH scores, is associated with a reduced likelihood of periodontitis among US adults. The relationship between CVH and periodontitis appears to be influenced by socioeconomic status, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in populations with lower socioeconomic status

  • Predication and Hume's Conceivability Principle

    Open Access•Haitao Qu•ARTICLE•Pacific philosophical quarterly•2023

In this paper, I will make the case that an associative account of predication in Hume seems to allow for impossible predicative conceptions—that is, the conceiving of impossible states of affairs involving subjects instantiating properties or qualities—which violate his Conceivability Principle. The natural response is to argue that such conceptions are not clear and distinct, but substantive worries are raised about a number of attempted soluti…

  • The Virtue of Consistency

    Open Access•Haitao Qu•ARTICLE•Pacific philosophical quarterly•2021

Consistency is commonly taken to be an interpretive virtue in scholarship, but the rationale behind this assumption is unclear. This paper explores the question of why we should take consistency to be an interpretive virtue; it finds that while considerations of accuracy might render the issue underdetermined, we nevertheless have reason to take consistency to be an interpretive virtue on the basis of considerations of philosophical worth

  • Does Venture Capital Investment Spur Innovation? A Cross-Countries Analysis

Open Access•Nawab Khan, Haitao Qu et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2021

This article examines venture capital composite impact on innovation. For this purpose, we made venture capital index using principal component analysis methodology to test the composite impact of venture capital impact on innovation. We constructed our sample of 41 countries on the basis of venture capital fundraising from 2006 to 2016. First, we empirically tested index individual component, for which we used ordinary least square regression wi…

  • Hume's Internalist Epistemology in EHU 12

    Open Access•Haitao Qu, Hsueh Qu•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2017•References: 9

Much has been written about Kemp Smith's (1941) famous problem regarding the tension between Hume's naturalism and his scepticism. However, most commentators have focused their attention on the Treatise ; those who address the Enquiry often take it to express essentially the same message as the Treatise . When Hume's scepticism in the Enquiry has been investigated in its own right, commentators have tended to focus on Hume's inductive scepticism …

  • Prescription, Description, and Hume's Experimental Method

Haitao Qu, Hsueh Qu•ARTICLE•British Journal for the History…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 5

There seems a potential tension between Hume's naturalistic project and his normative ambitions. Hume adopts what I call a methodological naturalism: that is, the methodology of providing explanations for various phenomena based on natural properties and causes. This methodology takes the form of introducing ‘the experimental method of reasoning into moral subjects’, as stated in the subtitle of the Treatise; this ‘experimental method’ seems a pa…

  • The simple duality: Humean passions

    Open Access•Haitao Qu•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Philosophy•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Hume views the passions as having both intentionality and qualitative character, which, in light of his Separability Principle, seemingly contradicts their simplicity. I reject the dominant solution to this puzzle of claiming that intentionality is an extrinsic property of the passions, arguing that a number of Hume's claims regarding the intentionality of the passions (pride and humility in particular) provide reasons for thinking an intrinsic a…
