For this photo essay, the authors discovered thousands of pictures that depict racism published by prominent colleges throughout the state of Virginia. They present a small amount of this yearbook content as evidence that racism has long dominated campus life at Virginia colleges
Levels of combatant control and the patterns of non-incumbent/insurgent violence experienced by civilians living in Sunni–Arab communities in Iraq (2004–2009)
This study explores how one social-structural variable, control over Sunni-Arab communities during the Iraq civil war, affected the types of violence used by insurgent/non-government actors that killed and injured civilians in these communities from January 2004 to December 2009. Cooperative Accounts: Avoiding Conflict and Repairing Social Relations
The analytical concept of accounts has long presented sociologists with an excellent tool for the study of talk. Nonetheless, studies of accounts often neglect the fact that cooperation is common when an account for untoward behavior is constructed. This study investigates whether the field of social movements is occupied by parochial concerns. Using a content analysis of two prominent journals that study social movements – Mobilization: An International Journal and Social Movement Studies: Journal of Social and Political Protest – it was found that the field is dominated by the study of Western movements, but is also relatively ‘worldly’ when compared to other academic sub-disciplines.
