Cognitive and non-cognitive traits and the intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic inequality
An Empirical Investigation into Measurement and Determinants of Food Security
We examine the association between calorie-based indicators and experiential indicators of food security using data from slum households of Kolkata surveyed in 2010–2011. Experiential indicator is constructed following the United States Household Food Security Survey Module. Calorie based indicator is constructed using household-specific calorie norms. Modelling techniques take account of potential endogeneity in the relationship. The two indicat…
Australian university productivity growth and public funding revisited
The Australian Government provides basic operating grants to universities, which are used to teach domestic undergraduate students. It imposes a productivity offset on the grants to encourage improvements in university productivity. But it is not transparent and does not vary across universities. Thus, universities have little incentive to improve performance. This paper develops an alternative framework that uses incentive regulation to allocate…

Who Shrunk China? Puzzles in the Measurement of Real GDP
The latest World Bank estimates of real GDP per capita for China are significantly lower than previous ones. We review possible sources of this puzzle and conclude that it reflects a combination of factors, including substitution bias in consumption, reliance on urban prices which we estimate are higher than rural ones, and the use of an expenditure-weighted rather than an output-weighted measure of GDP. Taking all these together, we estimate tha…
Assessing the Welfare Effects of Microfinance in Vietnam: Empirical Results from a Quasi-Experimental Survey
This article analyses the effects of NGO microfinance programmes on household welfare in Vietnam. Data on 470 households across 25 villages were collected using a quasi-experimental survey approach to overcome any self-selection bias. The sample was designed so that member households of microfinance programmes were compared with non-member households with similar characteristics. The analysis shows no significant effects of participation in NGO m…
Inference for Income Distributions Using Grouped Data
We develop a general approach to estimation and inference for income distributions using grouped or aggregate data that are typically available in the form of population shares and class mean incomes, with unknown group bounds. We derive generic moment conditions and an optimal weight matrix that can be used for generalized method-of-moments (GMM) estimation of any parametric income distribution. Our derivation of the weight matrix and its invers…
Global Income Distributions and Inequality, 1993 and 2000: Incorporating Country-Level Inequality Modeled with Beta Distributions
Using a method-of-moments estimator, flexible three-parameter beta distributions are fitted to aggregate country-level income data to overcome an untenable assumption of previous studies that persons within each income group receive the same income. Regional and global income distributions are derived as weighted mixtures of country-specific distributions. Analytical expressions for Gini and Theil's measures of inequality at country, regional, an…

Metafrontier frameworks for the study of firm-level efficiencies and technology ratios
Estimating and Combining National Income Distributions Using Limited Data
A major problem encountered in studies of income inequality at regional and global levels is estimating income distributions from data that are in summary form. In this article we estimate national and regional income distributions within a general framework that relaxes the assumption of constant income within groups. We propose a technique to estimate the parameters of a beta-2 distribution using grouped data. We model regional income distribut…

Price competitiveness of tourism packages to Australia: Beyond the “Big Mac” index
One issue facing any country or region concerns its price competitiveness as a package tour destination. One method of measuring this is to use what in other contexts has been referred to as the Big Mac approach. The “Big Mac” is a simple product with ingredients in fixed proportions, whereas the tourism product is a very complex one comprising different components depending on tourist expenditure patterns. There is no equivalent tourism product …

Funding local government in australia: The evolution of untied commonwealth financial assistance
Australian fiscal federalism possesses a greater degree of vertical imbalance than comparable federations elsewhere due to a concentration of revenue-raising powers at the level of the Commonwealth government and a concentration of expenditure functions at the state and local government levels. Efforts to deal with this problem have focused on intergovernmental grants. While substantial literature exists on the financial nexus between the Commonw…
Indonesian Manufacturing Sector Output and Productivity: An Australian Comparative Perspective, 1975–90
This paper provides industry-of-origin comparative estimates of real output and labour productivity in the Indonesian and Australian manufacturing sectors. It makes binary comparisons for the benchmark year 1987, and extrapolates the 1987 benchmark backward and forward using national time series, to derive comparisons for the years 1975–90. Expressed in ‘purchasing power parities’ (PPPs), the gross value of output and value added in Indonesian ma…

Computation of Standard Errors for Geary–Khamis Parities and international Prices: A Stochastic Approach
One of the areas receiving little attention in the past in index-number theory is providing standard errors for the index number estimates. Recently, Clements and Izan and Selvanathan used the stochastic approach to index numbers to derive standard errors for the rate of inflation and Laspeyres and Paasche index numbers. In this article, we use this approach to compute standard errors associated with purchasing power parities computed using Geary…
