About Visual Acuity and Type Design
This article describes how the principle of visual acuity could inform design decisions particularly (although not exclusively) in type design, by (1) providing an overview of the optometric (geometric and mathematic) protocols behind the calculation of visual acuity, (2) describing the typographic features that could be directly influenced by the principle of visual acuity, and (3) introducing a protocol to use such a relationship to calculate t…
A framework of transmediation
The concept of transmediation might be one of the most influential intellectual tools for studying, discussing and fostering innovative phenomena across fields of study. One could argue that the term itself is self-explanatory. Etymologically, it suggests a transition (to go across) between different media but the concept of transmediation has been shaped both by the somewhat historically lax definition of media and the disciplines that have adop…
Font Remix (A Metadesign)
In this article, I introduce the notion of remix as a form of metadesign—a methodological system—applicable to type design. Although the concept of metadesign has been entertained since at least the mid-1960s, it has gained new relevance as it has resurfaced in academic literature during the twenty-first century. This new relevance has been credited to the development of digital tools that allow for the automation of processes
Raw Harmonies
In this paper, the authors present the initial findings from explorations on transformation patterns of data in raw format when crossing or transmediating directly (i.e. unaffected by any other form of codification) between audio and visual media. These patterns have allowed the authors to engage in the production of transmediatic artifacts with some degree of control and agency, facilitating purposeful applications of transmediation. The product…
Sedentary versus active leisure activities and their relationship with sleeping habits and body mass index in children of 9 and 10 years of age
A random sample of 291 9- and 10-year-old schoolchildren from Asturias (Spain) was taken. Using path analysis, a model was tested in which bedtime, the number of hours spent sleeping and leisure activities were the independent variables and the body mass index was the dependent variable. The results show that sedentary and active leisure time and hours spent sleeping are predictors of the body mass index in children. Those children who go to bed …
The Interface Implications of Understanding Readers
This paper discusses our work conducting reader studies with prototypical reading interfaces designed in the context of funded Digital Humanities (DH) research projects. We discuss our conceptual and methodological approaches and contemplate which methods have been most productive in advancing our understandings of reading practices and interfaces. To situate this discussion, we first contemplate ways in which reading and new reading interfaces h…
