Hidden work-family challenges in the low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review of causes, consequences, and policy responses
Refugee exposure and attitudes toward refugees in a developing country context: Evidence from Türkiye
Despite hosting large refugee populations, causal evidence on how refugee exposure shapes local attitudes in developing countries remains scarce. This study examines the impact of refugee exposure on local attitudes and migration policy preferences in the world's largest refugee-hosting country. Using an instrumental variables approach, the findings reveal that exposure significantly affects perceptions of economic burden, insecurity, social dist…
School starting age and mothers’ labour supply: Causal evidence from the 2012 education reform in Turkey
Purpose This paper assesses the impact of a reduction in childcare costs, resulting from a change in compulsory schooling law, on mothers' labour supply in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach The 2012 Education Reform lowered the school starting age, allowing children up to 60 months old to enrol in primary schools. Previously, the starting age was seven years old, corresponding to 72-month-old children. We consider this change as an implied chil…
Refugee policy narratives of political parties in Turkey
This study examines the diverging narratives of the governing and opposition parties in Turkey about Syrian refugee policies between 2011 and 2023. We use a mixed method combining process tracing and quantitative exploratory text analysis of 1,001 parliamentary group speeches by four political parties. Return Aspirations of Syrian Refugees in Turkey
Voluntary return is proposed as a durable solution for mass displacements, but little is known about how refugees perceive their options. This article discusses what drives the return aspirations of Syrian refugees in Turkey. Based on the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data (2017–18), it shows that many Syrians condition their return on the provision of security, regime change and livelihood opportunities in Syria. However, their integr…
Do Relative Status of Women and Marriage Characteristics Matter for the Intimate Partner Violence
This article analyzes intimate partner violence (IPV) in a developing country context, namely, Turkey, which faces an enormous increase in femicide cases over the last decade. Analyzing a very rich nationwide representative survey on IPV, we show that it is not only the absolute status of women but also their relative status in terms of income and education that affects different types of domestic violence, ranging from emotional abuse to physica…
Labour Market Impact of Syrian Refugees in Turkey: The View of Employers in Informal Textile Sector in Istanbul
In less than a decade, Turkey has become home to some 4 million Syrians due to the bloody conflict across much of its southern border. That only a fraction of those refugees live in designated camps with the overwhelming majority spread about the country has led to hostile sentiments among some natives who blame Syrians for taking away their jobs. Still, research about the impact of Syrians on Turkish labour market outcomes is too limited. Empiri…
Voting Behavior of the Youth in Turkey: What Drives Involvement in or Causes Alienation from Conventional Political Participation
The decline of conventional political participation of the youth is a serious concern in many countries worldwide. Studying the Turkish example, this paper aims to empirically analyze the determinants of youngsters’ (non)voting behavior. The analysis shows that lifestyle is the most important factor, reflecting the importance of the youth’s everyday practices on their conventional political participation. Besides, being female, having higher leve…
Determinants of trust in Turkey
International survey results reveal that Turkey is an extreme example of a distrustful society. A very high level of distrust in the country is not only a bottleneck for its socio-economic development but also for a healthy dialogue between different groups in the society. This paper studies micro-level survey data from 2012 to analyze the determinants of different trust types – namely, interpersonal, group and political trust, with respect to va…
