Human Rights and German Intellectual History in Transnational Perspective
Human rights, recently, have been a controversial topic. A debate has unfolded that includes concerns about their political instrumentalization, appropriation, and narrowing, as well as fundamental critiques about their viability from leftist and right-wing perspectives. On the one hand human rights today are seen as central to domestic and international politics; on the other hand their legitimacy is questioned more than ever (see Benhabib 8–11)…
Making Worlds: Affect and Collectivity in Contemporary European Cinema
Claudia Breger argues that contemporary European cinema provides ways of thinking about and feeling collectivity that can challenge the twenty-first century's political trends. Through a new model of cinematic worldmaking, Making Worlds examines how films produce unexpected and destabilizing affects that invite viewers to imagine new connections
Erzählte Entgrenzungen: Narrationen von Arbeit zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts

On a Twenty-First-Century Quest for Authoritative Narration: The Drama of Voice in Uwe Tellkamp's Der Turm
This article discusses Uwe Tellkamp's Der Turm (2008) in the context of the early twenty-first-century return to “big novels” and authoritative forms of narration that has been diagnosed by critics as well as scholars. While situating Tellkamp's poetics as part of this trend, I argue that he is only partially successful in redeveloping such forms in Der Turm. Through a detailed narratological analysis, I demonstrate how the novel remains fundamen…
Hegemony, Marginalization, and Feminine Masculinity: Antje Rávic Strubel's Unter Schnee
Gods, German Scholars, and the Gift of Greece: Friedrich Kittler’s Philhellenic Fantasies
This article argues that the abundance of Greek figures and scenarios in Kittler's recent work points to a shift in his oeuvre, which, however, does not represent a radical break with his 'hardware studies'. At the turn of the 21st century, Kittler champions an emphatic notion of culture as a necessary supplement to science and technology. This conceptual marriage mediates grand historical narratives of cultural identity. Specifically, Kittler's …
Feminine Masculinities: Scientific and Literary Representations of "Female Inversion" at the Turn of the Twentieth Century
Throughout modern European history articulations of gender and sexuality have been closely intertwined. At the turn of the twentieth century the interconnection between both categories played a crucial role in redefining cultural identities at what contemporaries perceived as a historical moment of accelerated modernization. Discourses of women's emancipation, antifeminist responses, and emphatic assertions of masculinity overlapped with the cate…
