The Workplace Commons
One of the most important focuses in social theory within the last decade has been upon the commons. We contribute to the emerging scholarship on the commons. We point out that this literature tends to neglect the workplace. We then argue that the workplace should be included as a potentially important arena of commoning. Higher Education as a Gift and as a Commons
This paper takes as a starting point Lewis Hyde’s (2007, xvi) assertion that art is a gift and not a commodity: “Works of art exist simultaneously in two ‘economies’, a market economy and a gift economy. Culture, labour and subjectivity
The central theme of this article is the relationship between political economy and culture. This raises related questions of the place and valuation of subjectivity, and of immaterial cultural labour within the cultural economy. These relationships and questions have been articulated in a relatively narrow way, if at all, by contemporary debates, which have not sufficiently taken into account recent social and cultural transformations. Real and Virtual Connectivity
This chapter argues that processes going on in the virtual society(?) are to a large extent continuations of those going on in the real society. It thus exem plifies the fourth rule of virtuality (Woolgar, this volume): ‘the more virtual, the more real’. It argues that social processes in ‘the real’ and ‘the virtual’ are increas ingly characterized by the phenomenon of ‘connectivity’. We base this argument on a discussion of case studies of real …

This is a detailed case history of one of London's iconic new-media companies, AMX Studios. Some of the changes in this firm, we assume, are not atypical for other firms in this sector. This article explores some current transformations of the social. It argues for a shift from a model of sociality based on community towards a network sociality. This shift is particularly visible in urban spaces and in the cultural industries. However, it seems to become paradigmatic more widely of the information society.
