Low-Density Zoning and Health Disparities in Metro Areas
This study examines associations between low-density zoning and individual health outcomes across 44 large U.S. metro areas. Zoning laws that restrict housing density to low levels can restrict affordable housing, contribute to urban sprawl, and increase segregation. Density zoning is one of the oldest and most common forms of residential zoning in the United States, and conceptual models posit that low-density zoning should be associated with wi…
Features of Residential Counties and Individual Health Conditions for Opioid Use Disorder Among Older Medicare Beneficiaries
Objectives Little is known about how individual health conditions and residential characteristics jointly shape the risk of opioid use disorder (OUD) among older adults. This study examines hypotheses drawn from the collective resources and relative deprivation models to fill this gap. Methods Applying the cases/controls matching technique to the 2018–2021 Medicare Fee-for-Service Part A and Part B claims data, this study constructs a case-contro…

Strategies to Address Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy and Mitigate Health Disparities in Minority Populations
Beyond the complex logistical task of prioritizing, distributing and safely storing millions of doses of COVID-19 vaccines, state and local governments must simultaneously devise and carry out transparent plans that center equity and overcome the barriers to vaccination facing minority communities. Using insights gleaned from four focus groups conducted with health care and social service professionals serving minority communities in New York Sta…

Adolescents’ Contraceptive Use with School‐Discordant Partners
Characteristics of school-discordant relationships are correlated with condom use in varying and sometimes countervailing ways. Future research examining the mechanisms linking school discordance to decreased condom use, particularly for females, would deepen understanding of the emotional and psychosocial processes involved in adolescents' sexual and contraceptive behavior
Racially and Ethnically Diverse Schools and Adolescent Romantic Relationships
Focusing on romantic relationships, which are often seen as a barometer of social distance, this analysis investigates how adolescents from different racial-ethnic and gender groups respond when they attend diverse schools with many opportunities for inter-racial-ethnic dating. Which groups respond by forming inter-racial-ethnic relationships, and which groups appear to "work around" opportunities for inter-racial-ethnic dating by forming more sa…

Health Care Segregation and Race Disparities in Infectious Disease
Examining nursing home segregation and race disparities in influenza vaccinations, this study demonstrates that segregation may increase both susceptibility and exposure to seasonal flu for black Americans. Evidence based on the 2004 U.S. National Nursing Home Survey shows that individuals in nursing homes with high percentages of black residents have less personal immunity to flu because they are less likely to have been vaccinated against the d…
Effects of Prenatal Poverty on Infant Health
This study estimates the effects of prenatal poverty on birth weight using changes in state Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) as a natural experiment. We seek to answer two questions about poverty and child wellbeing. First, are there associations between prenatal poverty and lower birth weights even after factoring out unmeasured potential confounders? Because birth weight predicts a range of outcomes across the life course, lower birth weights t…
Job loss and health in the U.S. labor market
While U.S. unemployment rates remain low, rates of job loss are high and rising. Job loss is also becoming increasingly common in more advantaged, white-collar occupations. This article is concerned with how these patterns impact the health of U.S. workers. Drawing on recent data from the U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics, I find that job loss harms health, beyond sicker people being more likely to lose their jobs. Respondents who lost jobs but…
