Decolonising medicine
In response to calls for medicine, sociology, the university, and healthcare to be decolonised, this article considers the role of sociologists working in medical education in decolonising medicine. Efforts to decolonise medicine have largely focussed on biomedical knowledge and practice, while work to decolonise sociology has under-explored issues of health or medicine. Sociology in medical education sits between these two lines of work and has …
Older veterans
Materials have long been used by individuals reflecting on personal histories, and researchers have evidenced the associated therapeutic value particularly among older populations. In this article, we consider older veterans’ reminiscence through attending interviews and workshops, focussing on the performative potential of engaging with materials collected throughout their service lives. By considering their use of in situ and post-hoc materials…
A point of connection? Wellbeing, the veteran identity and older adults
Maintaining good wellbeing in older age is seen to have a positive effect on health, including cognitive and physiological functioning. This paper explores experiences of wellbeing in a particular older adult community: those who have served in the military. It aims to identify the specific challenges that ex-service personnel may have, reporting findings from a qualitative study focused on how older veterans told stories of military service and …
Messengers of stress
In 2008, Timmermans and Haas called for a 'sociology of disease' to develop and challenge the sociology of health and illness. A sociology of disease, they argued, would take seriously the biological and physiological processes of disease in theorising health and illness. Building on two decades of Science and Technology Studies and feminist work on biological actors such as hormones and genes, we propose a 'cortisol sociology' to push further at…
Was it autoethnography? The classificatory, confessional and mad politics of lived experience in sociological research
Gender diversity, recognition and citizenship
Temporalities of mental health recovery
Mad studies and neurodiversity
In this paper we explore what we consider to be the shared concerns of those neurodivergent and/or mad-identified scholars and activists who are seeking to make space for themselves within the academy. In doing so, we consider what critical questions and action people involved in these could address together in ways that move beyond identity-based politics
Real lives on the wall
In 2008 Rebecca Yeo, a researcher for the UK Disability People’s Council, and artist Andrew Bolton set out to conduct an action research project in which disabled people would imaginatively engage
