Teachers are important members …
Examining Shame Types and PTSD Among Survivors of Lifetime Sexual Victimization
Lifetime sexual victimization history (i.e. experiences in childhood, adolescence, and/or adulthood), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and multiple types of general and assault-related shame were examined among 95 community and college women. Participants completed surveys assessing sexual victimization histories, shame, and a clinician-administered diagnostic interview for PTSD. Levels of multiple types of shame were compared among survivo…
Training Medical Students to Respond to Intimate Partner Violence
Intimate partner violence victimization is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, requiring health-care providers to be well-trained in screening and intervention. The current study examined the impact of a brief IPV training on improving IPV proficiency among second-year medical students (n = 33) using the PREMIS survey at three time points: baseline, post-training and at a 1-month follow-up. The module demonstrated positive outcomes …
Characterizing Survivors' Descriptions of #MeToo Backlash
After going "viral" in 2017, #MeToo brought renewed attention to the issue of sexual violence. While research suggests #MeToo has benefited survivors, journalists have frequently referenced a perceived "backlash." Drawing on interdisciplinary conceptualizations of social backlash, this study aimed to systematically catalogue types of perceived #MeToo backlash among survivors. Using an inductive thematic analytic approach, the study team coded 324…

The research team used applied thematic analysis to investigate how survivors' perceptions of social reactions varied by the type of disclosure recipien…
Assessing the Impact of Online Social Reactions to Disclosure of Sexual Victimization via #MeToo on PTSD Symptoms Accounting for In-Person Social Reactions to Disclosure
Responses to sexual victimization disclosure play a significant role in recovery. In a sample of 138 survivors who disclosed their experience both online and in-person, the current study examined the association between online social reactions to the disclosure of sexual victimization and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) while accounting for social reactions to in-person disclosure and sexual victimization severity.
A Qualitative Analysis of the #MeToo Online Sphere

How #MeToo impacted the wellbeing of individuals has yet to be examined qualitatively. The current study describes survivors' perceptions about the impacts of #MeToo. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 51 participants with histories of sexual victimisation who either disclosed ( n = 37 [20 in per…
Latent profiles of social reactions to sexual assault disclosure among bisexual women
Results suggest women in the profile characterized by highest negative reactions to SA disclosure and highest bisexual minority stress (antibisexual stigma and internalized binegativity) may experience greatest distress postassault. Results highlight the importance for researchers, policymakers, and clinicians to consider and address both SA-related and identity-related stigma among bisexual survivors. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all …
Gender equitable attitudes as a significant mediator of bystander intentions among sexual minority adolescents
INTRODUCTION: Bystander intervention is a promising approach for prevention of sexual violence. Assessing factors that may promote or hinder bystander intervention among sexual minority adolescents (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer) is essential, given high rates of violence among sexual minority youth. Prior research examining barriers and facilitators of bystander intervention intentions does not consider how factors may vary by sexual ident…
Characterizing Intimate Partner Violence in the United States During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant global health concern. Numerous research studies document increases in IPV since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Timing of Sexual Assault Disclosure
The present study examined correlates of immediate (within 48 h) and delayed (after 48 h) sexual assault disclosure among a sample of 83 college women who experienced sexual victimization since age 14. The use of physical resistance and experiencing a "freeze response" was positively associated with delayed disclosure. Identifying the perpetrator as a friend/acquaintance, compared to a was a romantic partner, increased the likelihood of immediate…
Sexual Objectification Racial Microaggressions Amplify the Positive Relation Between Sexual Assault and Posttraumatic Stress Among Black Women
Black women report higher rates of adult sexual assault (ASA) and sexual objectification compared to White women. Sexual objectification serves as a reminder that Black women's bodies are viewed as sexual objects based on racist/sexist ideologies, though trauma research rarely includes race-specific stressors. In this study, we examined sexual objectification racial microaggressions as a moderator of the relation between ASA severity and posttrau…
Risk factors for perpetrating sexual aggression among adolescents
Although anyone—regardless of gender or sexual orientation—can perpetrate sexual aggression, most studies examining risk factors for engaging in sexual aggression include samples of boys and men, and do not consider the sexual orientation of the respondent. The current study addresses this gap in the literature by examining how risk factors for sexual aggression vary as a function of gender and sexual orientation in a sample of 1782 high school y…
Predictors of college women's disclosure of sexual assault prior to and during college

The present study explored associations between assault characteristics, attitudes, coping strategies, social support, and the college women's disclosure of adolescent sexual victimization ( N = 134), as well as sexual victimization over a 7‐month interim during college ( N = 67). A sample of first‐year college women completed pencil and paper assessments of sexual vic…
Relational Ecological Model of Identity
Although some scholars have extended the discussions on privilege and marginalization to include markers of identity that go beyond race/ethnicity, gender, and disability status, these attempts are still in their preliminary stages ( Black & Stone, 2011 ). Commonly accepted models for understanding identity (e.g., Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, Hays' ADDRESSING framework) have been developed by scholars in the West, with limited appl…
Latent Profiles of Social Reactions to Sexual Assault Disclosure Among Undergraduate Women
The types of social reactions that victims receive when they disclose experiences of sexual assault are important for post-trauma recovery. Group comparisons revealed that the two profiles characterized by greater negative reactions reported greater posttraumatic stress, whereas the profile characterized by moderate support/moderate negative reactions reported greater depression. No differences were identified for hazardous alcohol use. Findings …

The Bechdel in India
The Bechdel test is a popular measure used to examine the adequacy of representation of women in movies, and other media. Although often applied to Hollywood movies, the test has rarely, if ever, been used to assess Hindi cinema. This paper adopts, adapts, and extends the original Bechdel test to scrutinise stereotypical, non-stereotypical, and typical dialogic content of same-sex conversations in three genres of Hindi cinema – top-grossing block…
