Transnational dimensions of whiteness: Students from the Brazilian “Science without Borders” program in the United States
This article examines how whiteness functioned in “Science without Borders” (SwB), a program of the Brazilian federal government that funded, between 2012 and 2016, year-long study abroad stays of Brazilian college students, mostly in the U.S. and Europe. The analysis is situated in studies of whiteness, mobilities, and futurities and is based on qualitative interviews with former SwB participants and the analysis of the program’s official docume…
A conceptual roadmap for the study of whiteness in Latin America
This introductory essay outlines and contributes to fulfill the major goals of this special issue: 1) The examination of whiteness in Latin America in its articulation with broader social hierarchies, and 2) The development of a conceptual and theoretical roadmap for the study of whiteness in the region. The essay is divided into five substantive sections through which we develop our main arguments. In the first section, we offer a brief and admi…

Mapping Diaspora: African American Roots Tourism in Brazil
Brazil, like some countries in Africa, has become a major destination for African American tourists seeking the cultural roots of the black Atlantic diaspora. Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic research as well as textual, visual, and archival sources, Patricia de Santana Pinho investigates African American roots tourism, a complex, poignant kind of travel that provides profound personal and collective meaning for those searching for black …

The Dirty Body that Cleans
This article examines representations of domestic workers in Brazilian "common sense," in the Gramscian use of the term. It argues that the dominant trope of maids' bodies as "dirty," and yet the "most suitable" to carry out the job of cleaning, is produced at the intersection of three major components of Brazilian cultural politics: the pervasive authoritarianism that is directed mainly at the poor; the contempt for manual labor and the constant…

Domestic Relations in Brazil: Legacies and Horizons
Grounded in literature review and an ethnographic study, this article examines contemporary Brazilian domestic life. Relations among women (employers and maids) and between women and men are analyzed with a focus on the home as a space in which gender, race, and class inequalities are constantly reproduced. The article argues that what happens in domestic life is constitutive of wider social divisions and that the domestic is a universe integral …

African-American Roots Tourism in Brazil
The novelty of African-American roots tourism to Brazil is that to some extent it defies the secondary position occupied by Brazil in the African diaspora, a context marked by the hegemony of U.S.-centric conceptions of blackness. At the same time, roots tourism entails three kinds of inequalities: the disparity between those who have access to travel and those who do not, the belief of many African-American tourists that they can exchange what t…
Rhythms of Resistance: African Musical Heritage in Brazil
Merely by cracking open Peters Fryer’s new book and glancing at the index, the reader cannot help but immediately notice how wide is its focus and how generous its contribution to those interested in the African diaspora, Brazilian history, and Afro-Brazilian culture. Delving into the text itself, this first impression is wholeheartedly confirmed, as one quickly recognizes that the author’s research was not only extensive but also very profound. …
