Are we Really Past Truth? A Historian’s Perspective
The prevalence of the term post-truth suggests that we have, in the last few years, moved from being members of societies dedicated to truth to being members of ones that cannot agree on truth’s parameters and, even worse, have given up trying. But is this really what has happened? The author argues that, under the sway of the Enlightenment, truth has actually been unstable and a source of contention in public life ever since the founding moment …
Beyond populism and technocracy: The challenges and limits of democratic epistemology
The French Revolution in Cultural History
A cultural approach to the study of the French Revolution took off in the 1980s as a result of the coincidence of new intellectual and political currents with celebrations of the Revolution's bicentennial. By the turn of the new century, both the study of cultural phenomena (theatre, art and architecture, fashion, etc.) before, during, and after 1789 and an approach to social and political upheaval that stressed symbolism and the production of me…

Democracy and Truth: A Short History
Common Sense: A Political History
Common sense has always been a cornerstone of American politics. In 1776, Tom Paine’s vital pamphlet with that title sparked the American Revolution. And today, common sense—the wisdom of ordinary people, knowledge so self-evident that it is beyond debate—remains a powerful political ideal, utilized alike by George W. Bush’s aw-shucks articulations and Barack Obama’s down-to-earth reasonableness. But far from self-evident is where our faith in co…
On Being Heard: A Case for Paying Attention to the Historical Ear
THE English anatomist Helkiah Crooke offered his readers a complex, if unoriginal, account of human hearing as a function of the ear and the brain.Sound, he explained, is produced far from its destination, even when generated by the human voice.Oscillations of the air, resulting from "the percussion of two hard and solide bodyes," must proceed from their initial source across what are often great distances to the opening of the ear. From there, th…

Citizens of Nowhere in Particular: Cosmopolitanism, Writing, and Political Engagement in Eighteenth-Century Europe
This article explores the connection in the late eighteenth century between the invention of citizenship and the obfuscation of local, corporate or national identity under the guise of cosmopolitanism. The common premise in much recent writing on nationalism is that the nation, even if it is an 'imagined' community, provided the critical framework in which political identity and, hence, political participation first became possible for ordinary p…
