Architecture between empire and revolution: Housing and the shaping of Soviet Leningrad
This article traces the planning history of the first major housing projects built in Soviet Leningrad: the Traktornaya Ulitsa and Serafimov site housing estates. Initiated by municipal authorities in 1924, they were built according to the designs of its own Design Buro and the architects Aleksandr Nikolsky, Aleksandr Gegello, and Grigorii Simonov in 1925–1926. Spearheading the reconstruction of a large industrial suburb, these projects offer an …

Syrjitty vähemmistö”: Karjalaisnuorten aktivismi
Artikkeli käsittelee karjalankielisten ja karjalaistaustaisten 18–35-vuotiaiden nuorten ja nuorten aikuisten mobilisaatiota 2000-luvun Suomessa. Tutkimuskohteeksi valitut nuoret identifioituvat karjalaisiksi nähden karjalaiset suomalaisista erillisenä kansana. Analysoimme nuorten identifioitumista karjalaisuuteen ja heidän toimintaansa karjalaisuutta esiintuovana ja karjalan kielen aseman parantamista ajavana yhteiskunnallisena liikkeenä. Lähdema…
Exploiting the “white coal” of the Pasvik River. Negotiating corporate and national interests in the border region during the German occupation of Norway
The history of the Pasvik River, demarcating Norway's border with Russia in the north is inextricably linked with issues of security and national interests on the one side, and exploitation of natural resources and business interests on the other. This applies not least to the war years, as German warfare in Europe increased the value of the hydropower and the strategic metals of the border region. Drawing on sources from the archives of the mini…
Lake Ladoga. The Coastal History of the Greatest Lake in Europe
Aimed at researchers, students and all interested in history, this multidisciplinary study offers a spectacular view of the history of Europe’s largest lake. Adopting the lens of coastal history, this edited volume presents the development of the vast Great Lake’s catchment area over a long-time span, from archaeological traces to Viking routes and from fishery huts to luxury villas of the power elite. It reflects on people’s sensory-historical r…
Blagoustroistvo: Infrastructure, Determinism, (Re-)coloniality, and Social Engineering in Moscow, 1917-2022
Blagoustroistvo is an archaic Russian word used today primarily to refer to urban public works. This article, a collaboration between an anthropologist and a historian, focuses on aesthetics, rhetorics, and concrete practices of blagoustroistvo in Moscow during two temporal junctures: the first decade following the October Revolution (ca. 1917-1930), and the decade of Sergey Sobyanin's Moscow Mayoralty (2010-). Our juxtaposition reveals striking …

Helsingin moninaiset karjalaiset muistin paikat
Historical Reindeer Corrals as Portraits of Human-Nature Relationships in Northern Finland
Reindeer herding has been practised in northern boreal and subarctic regions of Fennoscandia for several centuries. The gathering and separation of reindeer for slaughter and calf marking are significant and cyclical activities of reindeer herding that are commonly carried out in reindeer corrals composed of circular-shaped fences of wood or stone construction leading into the corral. Using archaeological databases, we mapped historical reindeer …
From threat to opportunity: Sustainability and tourism in Koli National Park
Across the globe, conservation has been increasingly in conflict with other human activities. National parks are an important concept in nature protection and probably the most recognized institution in nature tourism worldwide. The concept of sustainable nature tourism became a part of the planning and management of Finnish national parks at the beginning of the new millennium. We analyze the environmental conflict and the idea and practices of …

Memory politics in transition: Nostalgia tours and gilded memories of Petsamo
The paper examines politics of memory related to the Arctic Finnish-Russian-Norwegian borderland, Petsamo-Pechenga. How it has been remembered, shared and interpreted after the Second World War by refugees from Finnish Petsamo and their offspring, on the one hand, and Finnish public writing, on the other hand? Which means have been used to revitalize their collective and personal narratives and construct the geohistorical space of Petsamo? During…

A Political Profile of Tarja Halonen, the First Finnish Female President
Neither historiographers nor social scientists have paid much attention to the position of women among the highest political elite, as heads of state and especially as presidents. Such women are rare: there are few female presidents, and their role is often ceremonial. At the end of 2016, there were four female presidents in the nineteen republics belonging to the European Union. Yet female presidency is a very important theme from the perspectiv…
Exile and Repatriation: Experiences from the Zambezi Region, Namibia
The Namibian Zambezi region, formerly Eastern Caprivi, has an exceptional borderland geohistory. It resulted from the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty between Great Britain and Germany in 1890, to give Germany a corridor to the Zambezi River linking German East and South-West Africa. The Caprivi Strip as it was called proved useless, but has remained part of the geopolitical setting of Southern Africa to date. During the struggle for independence from …

A Sense of Terijoki: The Discourse of Karelia in the Karelian Borderlands
Karelia, the borderland between Finland and Russia, has been a “land of quarrels” for centuries. The Swedish kingdom, the Novgorod realm, and the Russian Empire, one after another, have colonized the area. In 1812 the southwest part of Karelia, the Karelian Isthmus, was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Finland. This incorporation was practical: for hundreds of years the area had already been a region of Finnish-speaking people. After Finland'…
Scholars discover local history: The case of northeast Lapland in the 18th century
The academic study of local and regional history in Sweden took on a quite new form and significance in the 18th century. Humiliating defeats in wars had brought the kingdom's period of greatness to an end and forced the crown to re-evaluate the country's position and image and reconsider the internal questions of economic efficiency and settlement. One aspect in this was more effective economic and political control over the peripheral parts of …
Passages Westward
The West has always been a resource for the Finns. Scholars, artists and other professionals have sought contacts from Europe throughout the centuries. The Finnish experience in Western Europe and the New World is a story of migrant laborers, expatriates and specialists working abroad. But you don’t have to be born in Finland to be a Finn. The experiences of second-generation Finnish immigrants and their descendants open up new possibilities for …
