The ‘Agitation Thesis’ Revisited: The Finnish Civil War of 1918
This article reassesses the classic ‘agitation thesis’ by dissecting how newspaper discourses shaped the trajectory of the Finnish Civil War, focusing on the temporal rhythms and ideological variation of political language during 1917–18. Combining close reading with computational text‐mining of four mass‐circulation political newspapers (socialist Työmies , conservative Uusi Suometar , liberal Helsingin Sanomat and agrarian Ilkka ), the analysis…
Extension or Expansion: Quantitative Conceptual Analysis of Parliamentary Uses of “Democratic” in Sweden and Britain, 1950s–1990s
Scholars have argued that following 1968, the idea of democracy was extended into new domains in Europe. To assess this, we focus on how MPs qualified phenomena as “democratic” in Britain and Sweden. We use word embeddings to automatically locate words whose contextual similarity to “democratic” decreased or increased. We combine this with bigram analysis, manually classifying word pairs including “democratic.” Our results partly lend credence to…
Bankrupt widows. Gendered features of merchant business and bankruptcy in late pre-industrial society
Bankruptcy has never treated people equally, and it still bares many gendered features today. In pre-industrial societies there were only a few bankrupt women debtors, and those who did go bankrupt were typically widows, who could continue their husband's business and become commercially and legally independent. This article builds on a micro-historical case study of two Finnish merchant widows who eventually went bankrupt, with the aim of invest…
Suomen esiteollisen kauden valuuttakurssimuunnin (1534–1880)
Esittelemme artikkelissa a…
Ideologies as conceptual networks: Towards a Data-Intensive Approach
This article introduces a data-intensive approach to visualizing political ideologies as text networks. The methodology combines network theory with collocation analysis from corpus linguistics. Its similarities and differences to Michael Freeden's morphological approach are highlighted. The prospects are examined by focusing on the case study of Finnish socialism in the early 20th century. Primary sources consist of printed labor newspapers, han…
Parliament and Revolution: Poland, Finland, and the End of Empire in the Early Twentieth Century
This article explores the political trajectories of the early twentieth-century Grand Duchy of Finland and the Kingdom of Poland in the context of the 'global parliamentary moment,' when the constitutional script of revolution competed with the more daring script of social revolution. We scrutinize contrastive political choices of socialist parties in these two western borderlands of the Russian Empire. Finland and Poland emerged as independent p…
Democracy’ and ‘People’s Power’ in the Finnish Parliament – the Struggle between Representative, Participatory and Direct Democracy
The Finnish language is one that offers two translations of the concept ‘democracy,’ demokratia and kansanvalta (people’s power), which have remained in active political use. We analyse the existence of two terms as a linguistic affordance, providing political agents with possibilities for resisting and supporting the prevailing interpretations of democracy. We ask how and where the different versions occur in parliamentary speech (1980–2021) and…
Making of Modernity in the Vernacular: On the Grassroots Variations of Finnish Socialism in the Early Twentieth Century
The article scrutinises the concept of socialism at the grassroots of the Finnish labour movement during the early twentieth history. Primary sources consist of three handwritten newspapers, produced by industrial workers, housemaids and the rural proletariat. While factory workers could adopt the orthodox formulation of socialism from The CommunistManifesto, the socialism of the housemaids had a more existential function for it gave them a polit…
Religion, Patriotism and War Experience in Digitized Wartime Letters in Finland, 1939–44
This article examines religious and patriotic languages in digitized letters written by ordinary Finnish people in the Second World War. We combine qualitative and quantitative methods to analyse how religious and patriotic languages were used throughout the war years. Our findings show that the frequency of religious and patriotic vocabulary fluctuated widely during the war. Religious words were most notably connected to the intensity of the war…
Socialisms in the Tsarist Borderlands
This article presents a conceptual history of socialism in two Western borderlands of the Russian Empire-namely, the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Finland. A contrastive comparison is used to examine the birth, dissemination, and breakthrough of the concept from its first appearance until the Revolution of 1905. The concept entered Polish political conversation as a self-applied label among émigrés in the 1830s, whereas the opponents o…
Enterprising People and the Threat of Impoverishment and Social Loss: The Consequences of Urban Business Failure in Finland at the End of the 1870s
This article contemplates the individual level socioeconomic consequences of bankruptcy by studying market-oriented, self-employed people in Jyväskylä, a small town in central Finland. The article asks if poverty and social loss were inevitable consequences of urban business failure and also seeks to explain why some recovered and others did not. Through the method of collective biography and by utilizing a varied selection of legal documents and…
