  • No One Sends You Flowers”: Social Norms and Patients’ Emotional Journey Within Fertility Treatment

    Open Access•Julia Böcker, Nina Jakoby•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2025•References: 10

Patients undergoing fertility treatment, such as IVF, experience a range of emotions—hope, disappointment, grief, anxiety, jealousy, guilt, and anger. Through a sociology of emotions lens, we trace the emotional journey of patients in fertility treatment in Switzerland to understand subjects’ experiences with medically assisted reproduction (MAR), and to highlight how societal and cultural norms and expectations shape the way they use and emotion…

  • Socioeconomic Status Differences in Negative Emotions

    Open Access•Nina Jakoby•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 41

The frequency of the experience of particular emotions can be considered a measure of subjective well-being and therefore an indicator of the quality of life in the overall population. Key approaches to the sociology of emotions provide the theoretical background to this study. On the basis of Swiss Household Panel (SHP) data for the years 2005-2011, a random effects regression assessed relationships between the frequency of negative emotions (de…

  • The Self and Significant Others: Toward a Sociology of Loss

    Open Access•Nina Jakoby, Nina R Jakoby•ARTICLE•Illness Crisis & Loss•2015•Cited by: 16•References: 15

Losses are part of the human condition. And these losses are multifaceted-as diverse as human bonds can be. In this article, I review and analyze the diversity of loss experiences and the notion of loss of self. A sociology of loss illuminates the universes of meaning that refer to person/person, person/animal, or person/object relations and involve different kinds of losses that can be grieved. It also broaches the issue of the social regulation…

  • Talking about grief: Conversational partners sought by bereaved people

    Nina Jakoby, Nina R Jakoby•ARTICLE•Bereavement Care•2014

The bereavement literature acknowledges the importance of talking about grief. There is, however, a discrepancy between the scientific notions and practical guidelines on the need to communicate grief on the one hand, and the everyday reality of bereaved individuals, who have to deal with difficulties in talking about grief, on the other. Based on an online survey, I identified the range of conversation partners bereaved people sought out while g…

  • Grief as a Social Emotion: Theoretical Perspectives

    Nina Jakoby, Nina R Jakoby•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2012•Cited by: 39•References: 15

The article explores a sociological perspective on grief as a social emotion. Focusing on the social bond with the deceased, the self-concept of the survivor or the power of feeling rules, general sociological theories of emotions (symbolic interactionism, structural theory, behavioral theory) have the potential to deepen the understanding of grief as a social emotion. The article concludes by presenting a cognitive-structural model of grief that…

  • (Wahl-)Verwandtschaft — Zur Erklärung verwandtschaftlichen Handelns

    Open Access•Nina Jakoby•BOOK•(Wahl-)Verwandtschaft - Zur…•2008
