Negotiating the national and transnational in Glen Goei’s films: The Confucian patriarch and the return of the prodigal son
In this article, I analyse the two films directed by Glen Goei, Forever Fever and The Blue Mansion , both of which allegorize Singaporean history via the lens of a family with three children, ruled by a Confucian patriarch. Although Goei is generally not considered a pioneer of Singaporean New Wave film, his works shed light on the emergence of the New Wave in the mid-1990s and a second New Wave, starting around 2005. Whereas the first New Wave w…

Fragmenting Modernisms: Chinese Wartime Literature, Art, and Film, 1937-49
In Fragmenting Modernisms, Carolyn FitzGerald traces the evolution of Chinese modernism during the War of Resistance against Japan (1937-45) and Chinese Civil War (1945-49) through a series of close readings of works of fiction, poetry, film, and visual art, produced in various locations throughout wartime China. Showing that the culture of this period was characterized by a high degree of formal looseness, she argues that such aesthetic fluidity…

A Fresh Look at the Chinese Revolution
FOURTEEN YEARS AGO, in January i949, Peking surrendered to the besieging People's Liberation Army; ten months later the People's Republic of China was established with Peking as its capital; by the end of the year the Communist regime was in full control of the mainland of China, the Nationalist government having withdrawn to Taiwan. The fierce controversy which these events caused in the West, particularly in the United States, has lost some of …

The Tali District of Western Yunnan
N the far south-west of China, among the tangled mountains of western Yunnan, there is a long blue lake lying at the foot of snow-topped mountains, between them a strip of fertile rice land. This is the district of Tali, just north of the Burma Road. The road actually passes through Siakwan, which is the subsidiary township of the Tali district, and a short branch connects the city of Tali 10 miles farther up the lake. The topographical features …
The Northern Marches of Yunnan
THE journey which is the subject of this paper was undertaken in the winter of 1937, consequently some of the observations made upon the progress of new motor roads may now be out of date. starting point was Tali, a* city which lies just off the Burma Road in western Yiinnan. Following the main caravan route to Tibet northwards as far as Likiang, I then made a diversion into the loop of the Yangtze, traversing the great gorge between Yu Lung Shan…

Peace or War with China
XI TE cannot separate ourselves from the realities we see before us. VI VSo says Mao Tse-tung in his New Democracy, the work which is now described by Chinese Communist spokesmen as new contribution to the treasury of Marxist-Leninist thought. The advice is certainly sound. The realities will in the end determine events, and the task of statesmanship is to distinguish these realities from the wishful thinking and cherished fallacies of interested…
The Chinese Revolution and the West
C HINESE intervention in the Korean war and the consequent intertnational tension have clearly revealed certain deep differences between the Western nations in their attitudes towards the Chinese Revolution and its bearing on world politics. It has become plain that there is an American view, a British view (with which those European countries closely concerned are inclined to agree), and an Asian view, of which India has constituted herself the …
