  • Narrative imagination in milieu therapy

Sissel Alsaker, Lena A Ulfseth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Milieu therapy is an occupation-based treatment aimed at enhancing recovery in mental health patients that is grounded in the healing function of being and doing habitual and creative occupations together, thus transcending the individual. The purpose of this study was to explore these situated relations, discovering how relations emerge and are facilitated in the occupational context of a milieu therapy ward. The study is part of an ongoing ethn…

  • Homeward bound

    Lena A Ulfseth, Staffan Josephsson et al.•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 10

With a focus on enacted narratives, this ethnographic study addresses how people with mental illness communicate returning home after a treatment stay at a psychiatric centre. Data were analysed based on Ricoeur’s theory of narrative and action. Our analysis consisted of three analytic layers: the significant issue of discharge, identifying three stories of how being on the way home is enacted, and a further interpretation and discussion. The nar…

  • Meaning-Making in Everyday Occupation at a Psychiatric Centre

Lena A Ulfseth, Staffan Josephsson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 11

Experiences of meaning in everyday life are crucial for everyone, including people with mental illness, who often have specific challenges in providing themselves with engaging occupation and social relations. However, how meaning occurs in the occupational context of mental health care situations is unclear. This article draws upon an ethnographic study of social relations at a psychiatric centre, and explores how processes of meaning-making tak…

  • Social relations in everyday activities among patients with persistent mental illness at a psychiatric centre

    Open Access•Lena A Ulfseth, Staffan Josephsson et al.•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Social relations benefit health but are challenging for people with persistent mental illness. Carrying out activities with other people facilitates social relations. What is less clear, however, is how social relations are established in everyday activities. The aim of this exploratory study is to gain an understanding of how social relations emerge in everyday activities among people with persistent mental illness. The study was inspired by eth…

  • Stories stirring the quest of the good

    Open Access•Sissel Alsaker, Staffan Josephsson•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of…•2010•References: 8

This ethnography based study explored how four women living with chronic rheumatic conditions related to and communicated moral issues in their everyday activities. Narrative analyses were conducted and showed that the women linked everyday events and happenings to moral quests rather than to moral issues. The analyses are presented in the form of four stories, stories which are emplotted with different moral quests, quests that are grounded in t…

  • Studying Narrative-in-Action in Women With Chronic Rheumatic Conditions

    Open Access•Sissel Alsaker, Rob Bongaardt et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2009•Cited by: 22•References: 34

In this article we aim to sculpt a possible methodology for studying how a good everyday life comes about when living with chronic rheumatic conditions (CRC). Our "how" focus acknowledges a woman with CRC as one member of a diverse population, whereby we question the biomedically based view that she differs from the population. The more frequently asked "what" question colors study designs and results in categories and characteristics regarding w…

  • Time Geographic Method

Ulla Kroksmark, Kersti Nordell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•2006•References: 5

This article highlights a time‐geographic approach to understanding the temporal patterns of people's occupations and their relationship to health and illness. It outlines the use of diaries to gather data and proposes that this method makes it possible to study the everyday life context of individuals, capturing i) Activity contexts (everyday context and project context) ii) Geographic context iii) Social context and iv) Experiential context. Th…

  • Everyday Occupations of Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Students in Scandinavia

Sissel Alsaker, Klara Jakobsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 6

This study explored the repertoire of everyday occupations of Scandinavian occupational and physiotherapy students. A time geographic method was used, whereby students in different countries were asked to keep diaries for the same period. Diaries from 22 students were analysed, from which three main time consuming occupational projects were identified: 1) Professional training, 2) Care of oneself, and 3) Recreation. These projects are presented a…

  • Occupational Pattern

Hans Jørgen Bendixen, Ulla Kroksmark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•2006•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Patterns are regular ways of acting or doing something. The literature provides definitions at three levels; Action patterns at the level of bodily and anatomical function, activity patterns at the level of the ability to perform activities, and occupational patterns at the level of participation in social life. This article draws on insights arising from a time geographical study of Scandinavian bachelor students which presents a broader definit…
