The impact of trade integration on the business cycles synchronization in West African Countries: Implications for the AfCFTA
Trade integration is significant in business cycle synchronization in West Africa. • Overall trade intensity and demand spillovers matter more for cycle co-movements. • Fiscal, monetary, and exchange-rate policies are important for synchronization. • The AfCFTA’s increase in trade will have a stronger impact on monetary integration. • If accompanied by deeper macroeconomic policy coordination within ECOWAS. This article analyzes the link between …
Bribing to Escape Poverty in Africa
This study assesses the nexus between bribery and poverty using the Afrobarometer survey. Our data cover 38 countries consisting of three survey rounds and a sample of 151,345 individuals. The empirical strategy is based on multi-level mixed-effects ordered logit regression. The results reveal that while poverty has a positive effect on the spread of bribery, inflation can mitigate the impact. The impact is stronger for people living without basi…
The role of governance and infrastructure in moderating the effect of resource rents on economic growth
This study investigates how governance and infrastructure moderate the effect of natural resource rents on economic growth using a sample of 110 countries from 2000 to 2018. The empirical evidence is based on panel smooth transition regressions (PSTR). The nexus between economic growth and natural resources is not linear and the underlying non‐linearity is contingent on existing infrastructural and governance levels. Evidence of a “natural resour…
Information and Communication Technologies as Catalyst for the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals at the Local Level in Africa
This study evaluates if information and communication technologies (ICTs) can play a role of catalyst for the achievement of most of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local level in African countries. We use the Afrobarometer Round 7 Surveys, and base our empirical methodology on 2SLS-IV regressions to take into account the concern of reverse causality. The findings reveal that ICTs have a positive and significant effect…
Mitigating the macroeconomic impact of severe natural disasters in Africa: Policy synergies
This study evaluates the economic impact of severe natural disasters in Africa using the generalised synthetic control method. In other words, it assesses how gross domestic product (GDP) would have been affected, had severe natural disasters not occurred. Moreover, it explores the determinants of the destructiveness of the impact of natural disasters, focusing on the role played by capital. We find that severe natural disasters induce a signific…
African Women Vulnerability Index: Focus on Rural Women
In this paper, we develop a new index labelled the African Women Vulnerability Index (AWVI) with a focus on rural women using Round 7 of the Afrobarometer Survey. The AWVI comprises 59 indicators in six dimensions, namely: safety, empowerment, health, education, economic prosperity, and digitalisation. Our findings show that: (i) Botswana performs best while women in Guinea and Sudan are the most vulnerable. Indeed, Mauritius appears as a good ex…
Trust Institutions, Perceptions of Economic Performance, and the Mitigating Role of Political Diversity in Sub-Saharan Africa
Several previous studies have explored the relationship between trust and socio-economic conditions but do not attempt to examine channels through which the relation operates. In this paper, we examine how political fractionalization mitigates the positive relationship between trust institutions and national economic performance in Sub-Saharan Africa. Using Round 7 data of Afrobarometer in over 1000 districts in 34 countries, we find that trust i…
The Macroeconomic Influence of Recent Political Conflicts in Africa: Generalized Synthetic Counterfactual Evidence
This paper measures the macroeconomic influence of recent political crisis, protest and uprisings in Africa with the generalized synthetic control method and evaluates the role played by natural resource dependence on the modulation of the nexus. We find that political crisis, protests and uprisings have a significant and negative nexus with economic growth while the nexus is positive with investment and price level. For economic growth, the devi…
Factors hindering health care delivery in nomadic communities: A cross-sectional study in Timbuktu, Mali
This study shows that nomadic populations do not have access to community-based health interventions. A number of factors were revealed to be important barriers per these communities' perception including the quality of services, poverty, lifestyle, gender and current health policy strategies in the region. To be successful, future interventions should take these factors into account by adapting policies and methods
Sociopolitical Representations in African Cinema: Paulin S. Vieyra, Djibril Diop Mambety, Eddie Ugbomah and Ola Balogun in the Footsteps of Ousmane Sembene
This article discusses the innovative ways in which African filmmakers Ousmane Sembène, Paulin S. Vieyra, Djibril Diop Mambéty Eddie Ogbomah and Ola Balogun offer sociological insights into, and cultural representations of, African contemporary postcolonial societies. These filmmakers are able to highlight the breadth and depth of the undercurrents of hopes and impediments in Africa. Their themes include social justice, slavery, alienation, the a…
The Covid-19 Pandemic and the New Poor in Africa: The Straw That Broke the Camel’s Back
This study assesses the incidence of the Covid-19 pandemic on poverty levels in 50 African countries by employing the PovcalNet computational tool for poverty monitoring. The empirical evidence is based on: (i) Pre Covid-19 macroeconomic projections of October 2019 and revised macroeconomic projections of April 2020 and (ii) three poverty thresholds, notably, US$1.90, US$3.20, and US$5.50 per day for the extreme, middle and higher poverty lines. …
Covid‐19 economic vulnerability and resilience indexes: Global evidence
This study complements the extant literature by constructing COVID‐19 economic vulnerability and resilience indexes using a global sample of 150 countries categorised into four principal regions: Africa, Asia‐Pacific and the Middle East, America, and Europe. Seven variables are used for the vulnerability index and nine for the resilience index. Both regions and sampled countries are classified in terms of the two proposed and computed indexes. Th…

Governance, Inequality and Inclusive Education in Sub-Saharan Africa
The study provides thresholds of income inequality that if exceeded will nullify the positive effect of governance dynamics on gender-inclusive education in 42 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for the period 2004–2014. The Generalised Method of Moments is used as an estimation strategy. The following findings are established. First, the unconditional effects of governance dynamics on inclusive education are consistently positive whereas the corres…
Factors Associated With Hiv Voluntary Disclosure to One's Steady Sexual Partner in Mali: Results From a Community-Based Study
Despite the widespread dissemination of HIV information through public awareness campaigns in Mali, disclosing seropositivity to one's steady sexual partner (SSP) remains difficult for people living with HIV (PLHIV). Disclosure is a public health concern with serious implications and is also strongly linked to the quality of life of PLHIV. This study aimed to analyse factors associated with voluntary HIV disclosure to one's SSP, using a community…

Music and narrative in five films by Ousmane Sembne
Diop's article focuses on music in Ousmane Sembne's films as an integral part of film narrative. The author first describes the traditional instruments of Senegal and their usage, and proceeds to analysing the mood they create in Sembne's first three socio-realist films (Borom sarret, La noire de/Black Girl, Mandabi) . As a narrative counterpoint to traditional instruments, piano dance music mostly indicts the colonial ideology and its aftermath …
The Wolof Epic: From Spoken Word to Written Text
The main issue in this paper concerns the transition from oral to written. It illustrates with two Senegalese epics where the author was involved in the collection phase and in the production of written English and French versions. The first epic is "The Epic of Ndiadiane Ndiaye" performed by the griot Cheikh Niang. The second is "The Epic of El Hadj Umar Taal of Fuuta" whose author is a smith named Birahim Thiam. Both epics are replete with hist…
