  • Virtues, Vices and the Responsibilities of Business

    Open Access•André Azevedo Alves, Paul Booth•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 14

This paper examines the development of Catholic social thought and teaching on the responsibilities of business. It begins with a natural law and Thomistic framework and shows how the general principles are applied to practical situations, firstly in the work of the late scholastics and, secondly, through the social encyclical tradition. Changes in emphasis are noted in the post-war period. The paper also explores how the challenges of corruption…

  • The animal question

    Open Access•André Azevedo Alves•ARTICLE•História Ciências Saúde-Manguinhos•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 7

As globalization accelerated after 1492, often in the service of European imperial expansion, human destruction of the habitat in which animals could express their natural behaviors also increased. Within this context, the question arises: just how much are we like other animals, and if they are like us, how much do we owe them? From the 1500s to the 1800s, travelers, imperialists, the colonized, and intellectuals tried to answer this question an…

Open Access•Daniela Azevedo, Daniela Silva et al.•ARTICLE•Análise Social•2019

    Open Access•André Azevedo Alves, Elizabeth A Morrow et al.•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2014•Cited by: 8•References: 17

    F. A. Hayek's The Road to Serfdom continues to provoke intense scholarly debate focused on the validity of Hayek's central claim that a mixed economy is inherently unstable and economic intervention will inexorably lead to totalitarianism if pursued for a sustained period. This article presents empirical evidence which shows conclusively that it is the mixed economy that has proved remarkably stable, whereas laissez-faire and totalitarian regimes…

  • Imagining Identity in New Spain

André Azevedo Alves, Abel Alves•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2004

Like many previous works, this book reminds us that the Spanish imperial hierarchy distinguished rank in a multilayered fashion, primarily on the basis of calidad and policía rather than the more ethnically and racially oriented limpieza de sangre. Indeed, given the nature of the hierarchy, Carrera questions whether colonial notions of raza as lineage can be compared to nineteenth-century notions of race derived from social Darwinism. She uses co…

  • The alpha factor and the conquest of Mexico

    Open Access•André Azevedo Alves•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2002•References: 20

“Alpha behavior” affected human politics and social organization during the sixteenth-century conquest of Mexico by Spanish imperialists. The behavior of Spanish conquistadores is compared to that of other primates in the well-known studies of Jane Goodall and Frans de Waal. Parallels between Spanish and Aztec behavior are also noted so as to identify the shared patterns of behavior that cross human cultures and may be called primate universals. …
