A Regional Study of Classic Maya Ballcourts From the Upper Grijalva Basin, Chiapas, Mexico
Late/Terminal Classic Maya ballcourts from the upper Grijalva Basin (Chiapas, Mexico) are described and analyzed in a regional settlement and political context. The upper Grijalva Basin is found to have large numbers of ballcourts compared with other parts of the Maya area. The spatial distribution of ballcourts in the basin matches the distribution of civic-ceremonial centers, reflecting the key ritual and political roles of the ballcourt. Absen…
The Archaeology of Political Structure: Settlement Analysis in a Classic Maya Polity
This innovative analysis of archaeological settlement patterns as a guide to ancient political structure focuses on the Maya of Southeastern Mexico. Working principally with data from the Classic Period in the Rosario Valley, Dr de Montmollin relates problem orientation and theory to themes with wide currency in political anthropolgy. For archaeologists interested in complex societies, the handling of the settlement evidence and the close attenti…
Land Tenure and Politics in the Late/Terminal Classic Rosario Valley, Chiapas, Mexico
Archaeological settlement evidence from the Late/Terminal Classic (A.D. 700-950) Rosario Valley is analyzed for what it reveals about land tenure and its relation to politics. Concerning the degrees of private versus communal versus "state" control over land, the distribution of settlement over different land types indicates that control over land was localized more at the community than at the individual household level. State control over land …

Scales of Settlement Study for Complex Societies: Analytical Issues from the Classic Maya Area
Several lines of settlement evidence from a study of Late/Terminal Classic Period (A. C. 700–950) Maya settlement and politics in the Rosario Valley of SE Mexico are used to explore analytical issues associated with working at different settlement scales. One issue concerns the utility of idealized settlement-scale hierarchies and the way these can be used to guide the analysis of variability in actual mapped settlement distributions. Patterns of…
Tenam Rosario-A Political Microcosm
Civic-ceremonial plaza planning is analyzed at Tenam Rosario, the capital center of a small Late/Terminal Classic period (A.D. 700-950) Maya polity, to shed light on political organization. When the capital's civic-ceremonial layout is compared with settlement patterns in its hinterland, the polity's hierarchical and territorial political arrangements appear to be reproduced in microcosm within the capital's civic-ceremonial zone. Possible politi…
