  • Modeling Status Interventions with Affect Control Theory

    Open Access•Shane D Soboroff, Christopher P Kelley•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2023•References: 24

Status interventions alter task group members' expectations for the value of each other's contributions. While research shows that status interventions increase the likelihood that a higher-status actor will accept influence from a lower-status actor, the process by which interventions unfold during interaction deserves theoretical attention. By conceiving status interventions as lines of action that carry cultural meaning, sociologists can use s…

  • Group Size, Commitment, Trust, and Mutual Awareness in Task Groups

    Shane D Soboroff, Christopher P Kelley et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•2020•References: 18

The development of social commitments has interested classical and contemporary theorists. Propositions build on earlier theory to explain how the number of members in a group may alter their commitment to the group as well as their trust and mutual awareness. A laboratory study varied group size to test hypotheses derived from the propositions. Commitment, trust, and mutual awareness were greater in groups of three or four members than in groups…

Theories explaining fear of crime and social commitment …

  • Engaging Students in Survey Research Projects across Research Methods and Statistics Courses

    Open Access•William E Lovekamp, Shane D Soboroff et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching Sociology•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 13

One innovative way to help students make sense of survey research has been to create a multifaceted, collaborative assignment that promotes critical thinking, comparative analysis, self-reflection, and statistical literacy. We use a short questionnaire adapted from the Higher Education Research Institute’s Cooperative Institutional Research Program’s Freshman Survey. In our Research Methods course, students begin by administering the brief questi…

  • Power, Status, and Affect Control

    Christabel L Rogalin, Shane D Soboroff et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 10

Power, status, and the evaluation, potency, and activity dimensions of affect control theory may be interrelated to a degree allowing for bridges between these theories. This paper makes two preliminary hypotheses: (1) Occupational power will significantly predict occupational status and (2) The potency of an occupation will significantly predict the power of the occupation. Two reliable scales developed from theories of power and status tap resp…
