Too Jewish or Not Jewish Enough
An Island Named Zion
This article offers a new understanding of the thought of Theodor Herzl (1860–1904) by reading it as political theology. It does so by identifying a neglected connection between two seemingly disparate themes: the Jewish Question and imperial visions of islands. Using these tropes to read Herzl's utopian novel Altneuland, I identify three pillars of Herzl's political theology: redemption through technology, the centrality of Zion, and active mess…
The Jewish Imperial Imagination
Leo Baeck (1873–1956) was a rabbi, public intellectual, and the official leader of German Jewry during the Holocaust. The Jewish Imperial Imagination shows the myriad ways in which the German imperial enterprise left its imprint on his religious and political thought, and on modern Judaism more generally. This book is the first to explore Baeck's religious thought as political, and situate it within the imperial context of the period which is oft…
The Specter of Marcion
Notger Slenczka’s 2013 call to decanonize the Old Testament provoked a public outcry in Germany, one that extended far beyond the ivory tower but received little attention in the English-speaking world. This article explains the controversy, which included public accusations of antisemitism; analyzes the origins of Slenczka’s view; and looks at potential Jewish responses to such a claim. The Old Testament, Slenczka argues, is a revelation to the …
Revolt against Time
This article offers a new reading of Jean Améry's idea of resentment, identifying resentment against time as another dimension of the concept alongside resentment against the perpetrators and the willingness of society to move on. This new facet of resentment is elaborated by showing the centrality of Frantz Fanon's thought for Améry's theory of self-constitution. In highlighting the relation between resentment and counterviolence, the article sh…
Panthers and Lions
Shaul Magid's Meir Kahane: The Public Life and Political Thought of an American Jewish Radical (2021) stresses the American character of Kahane's thought. This review analyzes this claim in two ways. First, it offers a transnational perspective on Kahane's philosophy. Second, it examines Magid's concept of neo‐Kahanism in light of Kahane's legacy in Israel
Whose Museum Is It? Jewish Museums and Indigenous Theory
Are museums places about a community or for the community? This article addresses this question by bringing into conversation Jewish museums and Indigenous museum theory, with special attention paid to two major institutions: the Jewish Museum Berlin and the National Museum of the American Indian. The JMB's exhibitions and the controversies surrounding them, I contend, allow us to see the limits of rhetorical sovereignty, namely the ability and r…

From Aher to Marcion
