The material politics of slurry: Mobilisations and transformations along the waste-fertiliser continuum
Agriculture is a major source of excess nitrogen inputs into the environment. In Germany's Weser Ems region, the extreme concentration of intensive livestock farming translates recent improvements in nitrogen regulation into a ‘slurry problem’ that makes manure disposal services increasingly vital for the beneficiaries of an agroeconomic production system based on ongoing intensification and externalisation. The paper uses ethnographic research t…
Online, offline, hybrid: Methodological reflection on event ethnography in (post-)pandemic times
This paper develops a methodological framework for event-ethnographic research in online and offline settings based on the authors' ethnographic experiences in the fields of environmental governance and sociotechnical transition before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on empirical event studies, we outline the particularities of organized events as ethnographic research sites, identifying key challenges related to the spatio-temporal eph…
Towards a more-than-human political ecology of coastal protection: Coast Care practices in Aotearoa New Zealand
Coastal protection measures are intended to stabilize the boundaries of land and sea-and of private property. But structural engineering solutions, such as seawalls, have negative side-effects in terms of environmental and climate justice: they cause erosion of adjacent areas, they limit public access, and they can lead to the loss of sandy beaches. So-called "soft" coastal protection approaches promise more sustainable and just alternatives. The…
Transnational Municipal Climate Networks and the Politics of Standardisation: The Contested Role of Climate Data in the New Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy
This article analyses the formation of a new global network, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM), by two existing initiatives, the EU-based Covenant of Mayors and the UN-supported Compact of Mayors. While this merger of two transnational networks provides evidence for the increased coordination and standardisation of transnational municipal climate action, this remains a contentious and incomplete process. The article identi…
Ethnography and the Politics of Abstraction(s)
Can there be an ‘Ethnography of Abstractions’?, legal anthropologist Annelise Riles asks and invites her readers to consider how the analytical and methodological tools of anthropology could tackle
