Early Jomon fishing activities reconstructed from the fish assemblages of the I-trench expansion of the northern valley area at the Sannai Maruyama site, Aomori Prefecture, Japan

Insect larvae impressions on pottery excavated from Middle and Late Jomon sites in Aomori Prefecture, Japan
Summed Probability Distribution of 14C Dates Suggests Regional Divergences in the Population Dynamics of the Jomon Period in Eastern Japan
Recent advances in the use of summed probability distribution (SPD) of calibrated 14C dates have opened new possibilities for studying prehistoric demography. The degree of correlation between climate change and population dynamics can now be accurately quantified, and divergences in the demographic history of distinct geographic areas can be statistically assessed. Here we contribute to this research agenda by reconstructing the prehistoric popu…
Early Sedentism in East Asia
The Importance of Studying Early Sedentism in East Asia East Asia is a treasury of archaeological information when examining the origins and development of early sedentism in human societies. Since the early 20th century, conditions, causes and consequences of sedentism have been major research foci of anthropological archaeology. Traditional archaeological approaches, which were heavily based on data from Europe and the Near East, tended to view…

Science or Narratives? Multiple Interpretations of the Sannai Maruyama Site, Japan
[Foragers and Farmers in the Japanese Islands] Jomon Subsistence-Settlement Systems at the Sannai Maruyama Site
Growth and decline in complex hunter-gatherer societies
The Sannai Maruyama site (3900-2300 BC) is one of the largest known from Japan's Jomon period (14000-300 BC). This study shows that over 1500 years the number of dwellings, their size, the type of stone tools and the fondness for figurines varied greatly. Nor was it a story of gradual increase in complexity: the settlement grew in intensity up to a peak associated with numerous grinding stones, and then declined to a smaller settlement containing…

Ancient Jomon of Japan
A hypertrophied muscle band (HMB) in the left ventricle (LV), which can be misinterpreted as apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, is a rare echocardiographic finding in a patient with normal LV wall thickness. Not only are symptoms produced, but changes in the electrocardiogram (ECG) are limited to the repolarization phase and show no progression even in a large HMB. Hence, we report a case of a 25-year-old woman who visited a local medical clinic…
A Processual Investigation of a Thule Whale Bone House, Somerset Island, Arctic Canada
In 1991, the authors excavated a Thule Inuit whale bone house at site PaJs-13 on southeast Somerset Island, Arctic Canada. Detailed analyses of house stratigraphy provide useful data for the study of the cultural and natural formation processes relating to the feature. Based on our analyses, and following McCartney (1979a), six stages are recognized: 1) raw material procurement, 2) house construction, 3) house use and maintenance, 4) house abando…

Introduction
Jomon Pottery Production at Honmura-cho and Isarago Sites
The purpose of this paper is to examine whether Jomon pottery from two neighboring sites can be chemically distinguished from each other. For this purpose, minor and trace element composition of Jomon potsherds from the Honmura cho and Isarago sites was determined using energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence (EDXRF). The results supported the hypothesis that the majority of the Early Jomon pottery from each of these two sites was produced locally u…
Jomon archaeology and the representation of Japanese origins
Since 1992, on-going excavations of the Early to Middle Jomon period Sannai Maruyama site (3500-2000 BC) have uncovered the large size and complexity of this prehistoric hunter-gatherer settlement
Numbers of pit dwellings in early Jomon Moroiso stage sites
The objective of this paper is to illustrate a method for estimating the number of simultaneously occupied dwellings in a site, and to test it by applying it to Jomon settlement data.Data are taken from 51 Early Jomon sites of the Moroiso pottery stage (ca 5000 B. P.) in the Kanto district. All the Moroiso stage dwellings in each site are divided into six sub-stages based upon Moroiso pottery sub-types.88 percent of all the cases analyzed in the p…
