At the boundaries of order: Narrativity in a multi-order world
How are distinctions between political orders produced, maintained, and unsettled in a multi-order world? Drawing on Trine Flockhart’s conceptualization of global politics as composed of plural and interacting orders, I develop a thicker relational account of the multi-order world by conceptualizing narrativity as a form of boundary work through which lines of differentiation between orders are socially constituted. Rather than focusing on narrat…
Forum: Gender, race, colonialism, and international practice theory
International practice theory (IPT) is now firmly established as a key theoretical and methodological framework for International Relations (IR), offering novel ways to address the oversight around the ‘everyday’ in global politics. Yet, the presumed novelty of such an approach is surprising to feminist, race, and postcolonial IR scholars who have thought deeply about the problem of the everyday. Surprisingly, these approaches have been footnotes…
Security Assistance and the Crisis of the Liberal International Order
The crisis of the Liberal International Order (LIO) has intensified amid growing great-power competition, the war in Ukraine, and the erosion of multilateral institutions. This Forum examines security assistance (SA)—the training, equipping and support of external security actors—as a critical lens for understanding how this crisis is unfolding and how international order is increasingly contested in practice. The Forum consists of an introductor…

Media and Mass Atrocity Prevention: Three Pathways of Potential Influence
This article critically examines the media’s complex role in both facilitating and obstructing the prevention of mass atrocities, identifying three key pathways of influence: structural prevention, operational prevention, and crisis response. It addresses a gap in existing research, which has primarily explored media influence on humanitarian aid and political support for interventions, while paying less attention to its specific role in atrocity…
Right(s) practice: Normative competence negotiation in the struggles over human rights protection in Amisom
This article examines the interplay of power and norm contestation in the AU–EU strategic partnership, focusing on struggles over human rights protection in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). While AMISOM marked a milestone for African-led conflict management, reports of civilian casualty triggered EU concerns over compliance with human rights and international humanitarian law. In response, AU officials promoted an African-led approa…

Religião, direitos humanos e interseccionalidades: Reposicionando a Categoria "Religião" No Debate Interseccional
Assembling intelligence in United Nations peacekeeping: Between Transformation and Path Dependency
This article traces the evolution of intelligence in United Nations peacekeeping through a practice-based assemblage lens. We address a gap in the literature by transcending the focus on 'peacekeeping intelligence' as merely an evolving policy instrument. Instead, we employ an 'analytic of assemblage' that reveals the intrinsic ambiguity of both the concept of peacekeeping intelligence, and the related competing perspectives as well as forms of e…

Turning towards practices: On the common ground of international relations and European studies
The so-called practice turn in International Relations (IR) has established a new paradigm that puts practitioners' quotidian doings front and centre of IR theorizing. It is proving to be an influential development also for area studies (AS) that share much of IR's scholarship and objects of study. This is certainly the case for European studies (ES) where the works of International Practice Theory (IPT) scholars has greatly contributed to raise …

A Pluralidade Religiosa Global E Nacional Em Questão
Warning about War: Conflict, Persuasion and Foreign Policy
How do wars end? A multidisciplinary enquiry
The cessation of military confrontations rarely coincides with the end of war. Legal and political matters continue after the last shot has been fired, civilians driven from their homes try to rebuild their houses and their lives, veterans need to adapt to their new role in civil society, and the struggle to define the history and the significance of past events only begins. In recent years, in particular, the changes in the character of contempo…
Living by Example?’ The European Union and the Implementation of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P)
Most empirical contributions to the normative power Europe (NPE) debate concentrate on whether and when the EU promotes its core internal norms abroad. In contrast, we investigate how norms emerging from international fora come to be accepted and internalised by the EU in the first place. We examine the case of the emerging responsibility to protect norm (R2P) and argue that the EU's implementation has been more limited and slower than one would …
Is There a Specific Ambivalence of the Sacred? Illustrations from the Apparition of Medjugorje and the Movement of Sant'Egidio
In the debate about the return of religion in politics, religious actors and discourses are viewed with a certain concern. Whereas some defend the peaceful effects of religion, most contributions understand religious truth claims as a challenge to democratic pluralism that presents a tendency toward violence. At best, the debate is summarised by Appleby's argument about the ambivalence of the sacred. We argue that this ambivalence is not specific…
Is There a European Way of War: Role Conceptions, Organizational Frames, and the Utility of Force
Europe is the region of the world where the network of security institutions is the densest. Yet, these institutions did not erase differences about conceptions of force employment among European countries and between European countries and the United States. Why have concepts of military power and force employment remained distinct and varied in Europe, and yet, what facilitates their convergence at the European Union level into the ambiguous no…
