  • Student Perceptions of Twenty-First-Century Professional Skills Developed in a Course-Based Research Experience

Open Access•Kailah E Hall, Tracey Sulak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experiential Education•2026

Background: Twenty-first-century professional skills are vital to success in science careers and can be developed through participation in course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). However, CURE research rarely explores outcomes of undergraduates who serve as mentors and their perceptions of their skill development. Purpose: This study investigated how undergraduate biology students perceived their development of 21st-century profe…

  • A Longitudinal Phenomenological Case Study of Undergraduate Science Majors' Motivation to Mentor Youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Research

    Open Access•Maryann R Hebda, Tracey Sulak et al.•ARTICLE•Science Education•2025•References: 42

This longitudinal phenomenological case study examines a science outreach program called iBEARS from undergraduate mentors' perceptions of their expectation for success, value in the experience, and knowledge gained. Undergraduates ( n = 24) mentored K‐12 classrooms through biology research projects, participated in pre‐ and post‐questionnaires, and follow‐up interviews 4 years later ( n = 4). We found that prementoring themes focused on expectan…

  • Improving Equitable Access to Graduate Education by Reducing Barriers to Minoritized Student Success

    Open Access•David Rehfeld, David M Rehfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2024

Structural inequities in graduate education perpetuate inequity for students with historically minoritized identities. This paper reviews previous reports of inequities faced by students with minoritized identities and suggests a path forward for improving equitable access to doctoral study. Specifically, this paper suggests investing in the scholarship of teaching and learning while using Gardner’s model of doctoral student development to provid…

  • Law enforcement in schools: Resource or barrier

Rachel Renbarger, David Rehfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 26

With increased media coverage of school violence, communities and schools have hired school resource officers (SROs) in an attempt to reduce the violence. These SROs often have a variety of duties and training depending on a variety of factors both related and unrelated to school crime and violence prevention. These may include typical school staff duties such as mentoring but frequently are more similar to those of law enforcement personnel, suc…

  • School Climate and Academic Achievement in Suburban Schools

    Open Access•Tracey Sulak, Tracey N Sulak•ARTICLE•Education and Urban Society•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 17

School climate research has indicated a relationship between the climate of a school and academic achievement. The majority of explanatory models have been developed in urban schools with less attention given to suburban schools. Due to the process of formation of suburban schools, there is a likelihood these campuses differ from the traditional urban school. The current study examined the predictive value of suburban school climate on academic a…

  • Costs of and Satisfaction With Child Care Arrangements for Parents of Children With Emotional or Behavioral Disorders

    Open Access•Lucy Barnard-Brak, Lucy Barnard‐brak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Child care arrangements, costs, and satisfaction among parents of children with emotional or behavioral disorders were examined as compared with parents of children with other disabilities. The current study used a large, nationally representative, and community-based sample of approximately 3,000 parents of children with disabilities aged 3 to 5 years. Results indicate that parents of children with emotional or behavioral disorders did not appea…
