Screenings from the archive: Nelisita (1982), an African vernacular‐language fiction set in rural southern Angola and its illuminating cinematic chain
Nelisita (Carvalho, 1982, Nelisita: narrativas nianeka ), a pioneering African vernacular‐language fiction film from the early phase of Angolan cinema, inspired me to conduct a series of interconnected exercises in visual anthropology. I produced an experimental archive‐based remake (Ponte, 2016, 127 stills or 34 scenes from Nelisita ) and screened it in both transnational urban contexts and an Angolan rural context reminiscent of the film's sett…
An Africanist Photo-ethno-graphy in the Portuguese New State (1928–1974)
An Angolan vernacular-language fiction film as para-ethnographic film: Nationalism and the evolving politics of film circulation and reception
This article examines Nelisita (Carvalho, 1982), an Olunyaneka-language feature fiction film made in the early years of Angolan cinema, and draws a historiography of its marginal production and ensuing scattered reception. Combining a historical approach to the film’s production and circulation, with an ethnographically-driven analysis of its recent screenings at a village sharing an Olunyaneka background, I discuss insights gained from its recep…
Crafting a doll and a film: Challenges in filming a doll-in-the-making
This article looks into Making a Living in the Dry Season, a research film grounded in a long-term stay at a highland agro-pastoralist village in Namibe province, Angola. The film is an intimate portrait of the day-to-day life of a family examining through the practice of doll-making a twofold notion of labour, that is, the labour in crafting and the labour in making a living. I explore insights acquired by the process of making this film and its…
Engaging with Dolls and with Play in Rural Southwest Angola
An intricate relationship between ritual and play has dominated the topic of African dolls in museums on account of historical field ethnographies based on a ritual-focused agenda. My doll-focused research agenda, grounded on eight months of fieldwork in an agro-pastoralist highland village in Namibe, proposes an alternative engagement to that of earlier scholars working in Southwest Angola. Engaging with dolls handmade by children in the said fi…
Cosmopolitan impressions from a contemporary Bengali patachitra painting museum collection in Portugal
In the contemporary work done by rural patua artisans, an Indian folk art, questions about tradition and innovation are interwoven with what I call “cosmopolitan impressions”. Focusing particularly on the recent development of women as painters and performers of the patua folk craft in an expanded market, through a study of the acquisition of a patachitra collection by the Ethnology Museum in Lisbon, I explore the cosmopolitan impressions in the …
