  • The Ethnicity Problem in a Multi-Ethnic Anational Islamic State: Continuity and Recasting of Ethnic Identity in the Ottoman State

    Kemal H Karpat•CHAPTER•Ethnic Groups and the State•2023

Karpat argues in his chapter not only that the nation-state is a specifically Western and European invention, but so is "the ethnic problem" itself, which arises because of the establishment within each state of one dominant language and ethnic group. The European nation-state form contrasts with the Ottoman system that specifically recognized the cultural and religious rights of the various ethnoreligious groups, as a consequence of which ethnic…

  • The Entry of the Ottoman Empire into World War I

    Open Access•Kemal H Karpat•ARTICLE•Belleten•2004

This article clarifies several points related to the Ottoman entry into the First World War. First, the Young Turk leaders mistrusted deeply Great Britain which had occupied Egypt in 1882, and appeared disposed to satisfy French and Italian ambitions at the Ottoman expense. Yet, most of the Unionists, not to speak of the public and Parliament, were opposed to war. Indeed, the British and French tacitly agreed to divide the Ottoman state. For this…

  • The Politicization of Islam: Reconstructing Identity, State, Faith, and Community in the Late Ottoman State

    Kemal H Karpat•BOOK•The politicization of Islam•2001

Combining international and internal perspectives, this book analyses the transformation of the Ottoman Empire over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It views privatization of state lands and the increase of domestic and foreign trade as key factors in the rise of a Muslim middle class, which, increasingly aware of its economic interests and communal roots, then attempted to reshape the government to reflect its ideals. These ideals straddl…

  • Ottoman Past and Today's Turkey

Yücel Yanıkdağ, Yücel Yanikdağ et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Military History•2001

This is the first time the continuity of Ottoman culture in contemporary Turkey is discussed by a group of well-known scholars of Ottoman-Turkish history and society. This is done through a series of research essays on Ottoman culture, its organizations, its modes of thought, and its identities (and their changes). Also, they point out the confused view of republican Turks towards their Ottoman past. The insightful essays provide not only origina…

Population movements have always played a major role in the life of Islam and particularly the Middle East. During the nineteenth century, however, the transfer of vast numbers of people from one region to another profoundly altered the social, ethnic, and religious structure of the Ottoman state—that is, the Middle East and the Balkans. The footloose tribes of eastern Anatolia, Syria, Iraq, and the Arabian peninsula were spurred into motion on a…

Population movements have always played a dynamic role in the transformation of human society throughout history. Indeed, there is not a single phase of history anywhere in the world which has not been related in some way to low or high rates of birth and mortality, to migration and settlement and to their social, cultural, economic, and political effects. The history of the Middle East supplies excellent examples to support this contention. The …
